CG management softwares and issues

Post by LSK » 01 Jan 2013, 19:49

hello there
my company is working on a big animation series (we have almost 100 characters and 270 min animation, too many objects and locations ),we have real big managing problems..unfortunately the main director and his assistant is in another country ( :-l :-?? ) and we must send the project files and previews for them every day..we here have the supervisors and co-director.i know its kind of weird but we have to keep working like this.we have so many problems to arrange the files and tables( tables are using to show the director a preview of every day progress for each person)..is there any kind of managing software for us to use ?!

Have you thought of looking at the problem from the other direction. ie Instead of trying to shift all of the stuff to them, rather find a way of shifting them to you. Wifey and me were watching the making of the LOTR and there's quite a bit in there about how the worked between NZ and the UK.

never got alien brain to work reliably. Coming from a development background where source control is your everything there really is a gap for decent source control that integrates into your 3d app, that doesn't cost s testicle or two to buy.

1 year ago, I developed a asset and task management software for managing works between on site and off site CG production teams. Fancily named it 'Studiosync'.

I was developed in php and jquery. Pretty much open codes. What it did was, pretty much like this. Every resource had their login in a web browser from their workstation, from their user panel they could check their assignments and deadlines, create jobs (if they are authorized to), review jobs and submit jobs by attachment. I remember to change the color of the assignment as deadline comes near.

Well, the code was never made public. I'm not a marketer and don't know where to take it. Do you think there can be a demand for this type of software?

To me the main thing that is missing is something that integrates into the Soft App itself. One of the thing Alienbrain did fairly well was allowing you to check files in an out (mostly to make sure that files were not overwritten by team members) and to allow you to roll back to any previous version.

Speaking of which is anyone using any form of Source control with Soft ?

alienbrain seem so cool.it has every this that we want but it cost too much ! :D (99000$ for studios )we are going to run a FTP server(instead of uploading files) to increase file access for director and his assistants.its a 270 min animation serials with more that 100 characters and so hard to manage everything :(

Alienbrain was too costly, and in our studio we both required intranet based (LAN) operation and internet based operation, so shotgun was not really a choice. Also, we didn't like the idea of hosting client copyrighted assets in any server other that ours.

I guess any production must be going through these kind of problems.

Set up a VPN and you always have 100% control over your files.

The latest and greatest SVN with Tortoise is a great alternative for asset management. The only software I've seen so far that has a good mix of asset control and built in tools for PM is Project Overlord. Inexpensive and has a ton of good features.

Tortoise is a shell so it might as well be built into SI. You can check out and commit right from the SI file requester. The only short coming is that it doesn't automatically notify user A if user B has checked something out or modified. It's necessary to do "check for modifications".
