New tutorials and examples going up

Post by Matic » 01 Jan 2013, 18:59

Hi gang.

I've written a new novice-to-intermediate level tutorial on my blog, and am going to try to update ICE-related content as often as work allows. My main goal is to help artists like the many I work with who may have seen ICE and want get into it but who are intimidated by what they perceive as technical/math skills required.

And also as a blog to jot down whatever comes to mind. :)

ICE needs more content for people first exploring, and a book takes waaay too much time, it so I'm trying to use the blog as a way to help fill some odd knowledge gaps artists may miss while teaching themselves.

So the content may be a bit basic for many here, but regardless feedback is welcome: http://andy.moonbase.net

Cheers

That site is great. We have a few students each year are keen to get into ICE and then kinda hit a brick wall. There is a very definite requirement for Intro to ICE tutorials.

Will be adding it to their suggested sites reading list. ;)

Hi. Glad to see this, very appreciated because it really fills a hole. I too will point everyone curious about the ICE to your blog.

Very Nice. For me it is not basic. Liked that "point is a vector".

Thanks for the kind words, its good to know folks are looking. :) I hope the posts prove helpful to people, feel free to let me know if there are any particular topics or points of confusion and I'll try to cover them. Going to be on a job for a bit, after that I'm hoping to go over frames of reference and perhaps dust off some of the terrain generation work I did previously, which can be improved quite a bit now that ice modeling is viable. Cheers.

This tutorial is good but after the modulo paragraph, I being to wonder what is "Get Array from sub-indices" ? You should team up with Blair, he is pretty good at the tutorial creation.

Good point, thanks for the feedback. One of the big challenges I had writing this was deciding how in-depth to get... I didn't want to have to start at a point where I was teaching ice completely from the ground up, but also wanted to keep it close to the basics so that it helped newer ICE users as my primary goal. A difficult balance. I think adding a paragraph about sub-indices would be a good addition, thanks.

Re: Blair... You're right he's a tutorial pro. :) the only problem is most of this stuff I'm doing at odd hours or times inbetween my "actual" work. If I don't keep it loose and informal for myself I'm afraid it will end up becoming too much of a drag on my time to keep up. That's why I'm likely to just release a bunch of sample scenes for every full write up I do, time is precious. :D

Nice, thanks. I (still, after using it for years) don't find ICE easy so the more resources the better.

Helge Mathee's array tutorial should clear that up - . ;)

Thanks for tutorials, Andy. I'm not that experienced with Strands, so hopefully this helps... LOVE the post about the mech on your site. Smile shot is pure genius! :D
