SI2010 - first impressions?

Post by Hirazi Blue » 27 Sep 2009, 11:51

As it is obviously way to early to tell, how SI2010 will hold up in actual production environments and other extreme situations, the thread "SI2010 - the good, the bad and the ugly" has to be postponed... That doesn't mean however that we cannot already share some of our first impressions about this new incarnation of "our" software.

To start things off, I'll share my two cents, hoping some of you will follow suit...
- It's too bad, that there have been some probably highly necessary changes in the SDK, as this means the backward compatibility for certain plugins has been broken. X(
- I miss the "fixed" & "known issues" lists!!! :ymdaydream:
- I am thrilled that they fixed the bug in the Custom Display Host as it enables me to embed the great "ScriptEd"-Addon in a dual monitor layout again, thereby being able to ignore the fact they also seem to have fixed the problems with the Scintilla component and have slightly improved the internal script editor.
- Ah... FaceRobot. As I am merely a hobbyist and won't be using it in a studio setup anytime soon, I'm afraid I won't be using it all that much (but hey, I could be wrong!)
- As far as the speedups and stability improvements go, it seems too early to tell (at least to me as a mere hobbyist, using only a fraction of SI's capabilities)...

So anyone else with a heartfelt tale to tell? ^#(^

well .... the speed improvements are noticable but i am still underwhelmed (compared to maya it is still many times slower and needs more ram for same tasks ... importing fbx - a terrible thing in SI ...)

wished there would have been some ICE improvements, since version 7.01 nothing really happened there - it has so much potential

so, a nice and good release that fixes some issues that the programm had, but nothing that couldnt have been done in a .5 (or SP) release i think ....

Before I forget: updating and fact-checking the documentation seems to have been no real priority...
(removing links to non existing pages on softimage.com for instance)
Ah well, a nice feature for SI2011 ;)

Oh: this quote I found just plain funny:
"The ability to upload compounds directly from within the ICE Tree view has been removed because the ICE Compound Exchange section of Softimage|NET is in transition." (my italics)

=))

:-? I AM STILL under my trial ~~~so here are some glitches found in 2010

1.freeze fcurve function is not working properly as it should

work around is ploting the animation

2.once biped rig is created by biped guide ,when trying to rotate upper body control or hip control of the generated biped rig~~spine or neck fly off in space~~

work around is save the file after the rig has been created then restart SI and things will get fixed. :-?

3.biped rig created by biped guide has problem with generated thigh rolling control, they not rolling in symmetrical way
and will cause flipping <this has happened in version 5. I remembered >
Probllem can be obviously seen under an envloped model when a charcter trying bend down both knee.
oh and I have three thigh rolling turned on when creating the biped
~~I have also check the envloped map they are absolutly symetry mapped perfect. :-bd
I haven't check the rolling arms <they may have the problem as well>

work around ..~you will need rigging and script developers to solve the case #:-s

4.click pass option>>pass shader diaolog , it won't let you apply any enviroment , output , volum shader to the pass.

work around..open scene explore and switch to pass navigation , select the pass and open a render tree ,to let you get through the problem

the rest works fine for me and a great job on edit normal tool~~ :-bd this is really needed in game production

;) hi luceric thanks for reading this post

#4 issue is solved today. after I install on other computer~~and I don't have a clue why it's fixed :))
I think may be I should try reinstall my SI . perhaps I got some of my setting corrupted.

in #2 a step I forgot to mention. I did scale the root model of biped guide and choose quterion spine to generate the biped and the problem will jump out. ;)

in#3 I also have scale the root model of biped guide and tweak the rotatation of the knee and thigh the whole leg .......... ..and I forgot how I tweaked it .
anyway I 'll upload my scn file for you guys to look at what went wrong ;)
PS.the file contains the biped guide which is used to create my biped rig
