Very nice CG in some parts (the robot are very well animated IMO), but don't like it so much (IMHO, top for blender was the Big Bug Bunny)

Make quality work using Blender is quite possible, but in order to do first class fx shots they need the budget as with any other commercial software.

Minus the licenses for the software apps. In other words, there are definitely advantages in using free soft/w like Blender and perhaps disadvantages too.csaez wrote:Make quality work using Blender is quite possible, but in order to do first class fx shots they need the budget as with any other commercial software.
And to round it up even more, I think the main problem(?) is still the human resource which is costly and necessary regardless of the soft/w and hard/w.

Watching this on a smaller screen, i thought it looked pretty good. It's the higher resolution that reveals the flaws... In a world of tablets, maybe that's the gap for blender to thrive in (although, such content is usually produced bigger as a preemptive action).

Usually they are releasing whatever is related to project, in form of DVD or like. Assets, rigs, python scripts, everything. Big players obviously won't be interested in material, but for small teams who want to jump in project of similar budget, nice resource. Beside testing, I'd believe this is a main advantage.

A quick detour to the movie itself: as a short movie it was bad IMO.
After "Sintel" (quick reminder: also bad), I secretly hoped,
they'd make something worth watching as a movie once again, but they failed miserably.
(A quality both "Elephant's Dream" and "Big Buck Bunny" IMO did have: while not great, still highly enjoyable)
And I wasn't even going to post my opinion until I saw the following on cgchannel:

You've got to be kidding me...And the Foundation is thinking even bigger: it has confirmed its next project will be a full-length feature.
Stay safe, sane & healthy!

Had the same feeling Hirazi. I dont get the complaints about technical quality. Seems very decent to me. But it is very tedious and non engaiging. Very different from Sintel.

How they work with heavy scene?....
Uncomfortable outliner and 3ds Max style modifiers
One very serious negative thing of Blender - try to work with over 1mln poly and have laggy like 1-2 fps. Solid shading realy laggy in blender
Impressive Cycle after MR.

About viewport, they have a Google Summer of code project under development (viewport VFX), and agree, actually viewport is the worse part of blender, but development is really fast.
About Stack, don't know, prefer softimage, but for my need it is not so vital.

Sintel i thought was very good, a few crappy exteriors but it held together very well.Hirazi Blue wrote:A quick detour to the movie itself: as a short movie it was bad IMO.

But i really coultdn't stand Elephant's Dream and the same thing is wrong with this one: the Dutch actors speaking english! It was a little better this time because at least i could stand the whole way through - i had to turn off Elephant's Dream - but especially the guy with the eye piece had a terrible accent...
Maybe this is an effect of being Dutch myself but it gives the whole thing a very ameteurish feel... If you're gonna have Dutch actors then for god's sake let them speak Dutch! Might improve the dialog wich was terrible as well, again very amateur.
Other than that (the things that ruined it
