actually Maya got its UV unwrap in Maya 2008, this just an auto version of the same thing.

Re: Maya BonusTools 2013 - UV Tools
Maya UV Tools seems to be much more flexible : you can unwrap (uniqueUVs) or apply projection to several objects, or unwrap a selection of faces. It would be very nice if Softimage can do it... I do not understand why subprojection do not include uniqueUV and unfold, it's bad for workflow, IMOHO.

At least they continually develop some UV tools and they may be integrated into Maya someday.

You mean the crippled version of what Unfold3d had to offer at the time? Might as well saved the hassle of implementing it... specially since free Blender did much more and majority of us already used Headus UV Layout that was and still is light years ahead of whats implemented today in Soft as UV unwrap tools.

idk what you guys complain about, softimage is a big particle plugin for maya, why would autodesk programmers waste their time making same features for all packages?

Re: Maya BonusTools 2013 - UV Tools
Unfold3D was in itself a nice bonus tool (nothing more, nothing less) to a release I mainly recall as a quick way to roll out Autodesk licensing. I don't think Unfold3D was ever intended as real full-fledged competition to any external solution...

I'd rather have it than nothing. It does a decent job for what its features are and the tools in the UV editor provide a decent toolset to get you where you need to go. I'm not saying there doesn't need to be improvements in the UV editor but a lot of people do find it useful. I really do wish they had more of the Unfold3D tools in it though.

I'd rather PTex take over the mapping world

In those video of Maya UVTools, I really like the way it works : whatever your selection is, it still works (you have several objetcs, a selection of polygons...). Softimage used to be very great in workflow but Softimage UVs are getting too old : automatic packing (uniqueUVs) algorithm is not as good as 3ds max, and you can not apply UVs on multiple objects. The same with the new modeling tools :
- apply thickness can only be done on an object level, not on a mesh selection (not very nice : you have to extract the polygons, apply thickness, merge, and re-apply animations... a nightmare),
- for cap hole, it only works with a point selection, and can not apply several cap in one command,
- apply slice between two vertices is powerfull, but not intuitive IMOO (3ds max slice is much easier).
About Ptex : does it work for realtime 3D too ?

For capping i use this script which works with multiple selections.
If you have a hole select all the edge borders and run the script in VBScript
Not sure what you mean about the thickness on object selection and not on mesh? I use couple addon for thickness that works pretty well.
Once installed you'll find them in Modeling menù > Modify > Poly.Mesh
If you have a hole select all the edge borders and run the script in VBScript
Code: Select all
DuplicateMeshComponent
ApplyTopoOp "Collapse"
SelectGeometryComponents ".pnt[LAST]"
ApplyTopoOp "DissolveClean"Not sure what you mean about the thickness on object selection and not on mesh? I use couple addon for thickness that works pretty well.

Where you guys saw the texturing capabilities of Softimage?
(sorry, couldn't resist)

Re: Maya BonusTools 2013 - UV Tools
I just want to UNFOLD3D.com, there is a link to the xsi plugin which takes you off to "softimage.com" and you end up at Autodesk.
So did Autodesk buy it out?
Will Autodesk do the updates?
Will Unfold3d do them?
Will it get updated?
Or is it like the Shave and Haircut, frozen in time???
