when he left, I think the previous softimage PM - who shall remain unnamed - gave directions to continue to work on ICE Crowds, HQ Viewport. Don't hesitate to let to let Cory know what you'd like the team to focus on (or not). Keep it realistic: Softimage isn't going to be turned into mudbox or an arch viz tool with iray.

Sure, we know that. Softimage must obtain features which are not available in other Autodesk products.

Call me a cynic, but i somehow dont see how anyone-outside of, maybe, a major client or two-can have an effect on what Autodesk does with Softimage.

"Please focus on finding a caring buyer, perhaps..?" Yeah, that probably wont go. :|

I wonder if he even opened Softimage once.

I opened SI many times so I am a better PM candidate than he is:)

Joking aside, I really want the team focusing on polishing the App more and enhancing the features that we already have.

The PM at autodesk makes the road map, based on various inputs and customer visits (with people from the dev team). That ends up being high level bullet points per release. Then it's up to the development team to flesh out all of that into actual features. Technically the PM doesn't have to have ever opened the app, but obviously that can better. But it can also be a bit bad because it could lead a PM to focus on what he wants instead of what the customer is actually saying. PM mostly spend their times in excel and legal documents, it's more of a business management job at Autodesk.

At Softimage, we had another meaning for the word PM that came from our Microsoft days. In those days, a PM designed features and did not understand anything about the business. EDIT: that position is called a Product Designer at Autodesk

You got to feel sorry for the poor bloke what with dealing with

customer feedback
prospective customer concerns
corporate strategy
engineering
external technology partners
and all the different Autodesk teams including Sales, Support, Education and Marketing.

for Maya.

He has to do it for the Entertainment Creation Suites, which include Max, Mudbox, Motionbilder, Sketchbook(?) as well

and now he gets Softimage too. It reads like he is stretched very thin.

Save him some effort he could look at the si-creatives user wants aggregated postings. (thats if the poor bloke even has any free time !)

right. there are a few other PMs on Maya, however. cory reports to the now famous Chris Vienneau who's a kind of super-PM

I really can't help getting the feeling that Softimage is vastly under represented under AD and continuously eroding massively more than it ever was before the acquisition. So we are supposed to be excited by this ? spare change from mr mayalicious? what a joke Softimage has become.

nobody said that. but the Softimage program manager he's replacing wasn't chinny or anyone you've ever heard of. At least now you know, and this guy has a useful experience on the world of 3D app and some perspective, imho.

one tiny step for Autodesk, one big leap of faith for Softimage. The irony of Mr Mayalicious being Softimage PM is no more, long live Mr Entertainment! :-bd and of course whilst this means nothing in the general scheme of things, it certainly made me smile and accept there is at least someone left listening to a Softimage user complaining about their personal treatment over at AD towers.

A lesson learnt today folks is that a squeaky wheel may get its oil.

Good of him to engage with users. Of course what matters in the end is always what the capabilities the product gives.

Would feel awful to end with that one-liner, so here's a case of AREA being well designed:
