Inset works fine here, please be more specific so that we can understand what you are trying to achieve.

This looks like a bug.
Two bevel ops with Center= 1 and -1 work here, but inset shouldn't break edges too.

100% of 100% works like that. Interesting and unnecessary tool like apply thickness on ice.

Oh, there are lots of modeling bugs that need fixing. For example, it that case i'd select the edge ring and SplitEdge, than select the created loop and Bevel to split in 2 and space evenly. This is the result:

Now, that'd be fine if we had a slider on Subdivide Polygons/Edges tool so you select edge ring, Subdivide by 2 and adjust the ratio. Instead, you have to subdivide by a huge number until your outside edges come in place and than delete the ones inbetween.

Isn't this ok behavior for bevel? It tries to do the best job it can to maintain a constant bevel width. On the top sloped polygon this is of course measured along the slope, so it's shorter when projected on X like here. I thnk this looks more like a job for slice polygons.

Actually my main gripe is that the create polygon tool snaps to internal vertices. Needless and painful. I've been begging for that for to go away for years :ympray: . Would improve modeling by 1450% for me..

;-) .. slice is great... If you slice from front view, first slice up, then second slice down, snapping to points, then the slices go in opposite directions. If you inspect both at once, you can have the result you want by adjusting one slider (offset).

A bit confused. Are you talking about knife tool here? [which also reads as "Slice Polygon Tool (Knife)" in alt+rmb context menu]

I guess that works, but isnt it much simpler to select the polygons, execute Slice Polygons command, set Nb Slices to 2 and adjust Spacing?

And while im at it, heres another question:

Can i slide/snap this edge accurately into the position indicated by the green line in some easy and intuitive way:

Simply snapping on the point while holding perpendicular axes works great when youre dealing with simple angles in object space, but once in local the workflow brakes.

Sorry to OP for highjacking the thread.

Ok. Finally it is a bug of inset tool
Somebody can posted to Autodesk?
Interesting will be fixed through a year?

@bottleofram - Looks like something the Tweak Component Tool might be helpful with
(with "Slide Components" and some snapping?)
But you'd still have to create additional vertices (edit: or a reference plane, obviously) to snap to.
:-\

edit: belated & pointless edit for completion's sake
Stay safe, sane & healthy!

Yes I meant knife. Some tools have a bit inconsistent naming =D
Selecting the polygons works too if you know the distance from the middle. I was somehow under the assumption you wanted to measure the distance from the outside edges.

2nd question: I don't think that's possible without a helper object. There are a lot of transform options like Ref and Plane, but I don't think any of them support something like this because this needs a match in 2 different coordinate spaces.

Would be cool to have Sketchup's snapping options with the protractor tool, angle snapping etc.

Thanks for answering guys. This was something that bothered me a while ago and just though i might have missed something... Indeed, as soon as the coordinate system is changed (applies to Tweek Tool as well), not much you can do to use the information from the other one. Luckily, there are tons of workarounds. Not a real issue.

More bothered by the inconsistency and redundancy. Would love to see these tools get a good clean up and refresh... Hopeful, not optimistic. :ymsigh:

Agreed, the quality of the bevel, slice/knife etc operators makes up for what's lacking in snapping, so there are usually workarounds.
Would be nice to be able to snap to surfaces though with isolated axes (axises?)

You can use the xsibase bug reporting thread for that. I think Chris still monitors it.
