from my point of view, integrated sculpt is a great addition. Cannot compete with mudbox or zbrush, but workflow will gain tremendously. Look at modo or blender, where the usual modelling tools poly by poly is supported by a more or less evolute sculpting solution, can modelling extruding or beveling as usual and use a move brush or push brush for adjust your shape in fly, or sculpt and adding a loop where you need without the need to remesh (like zbrush), imho cannot replace the need of zbrush or mudbox but is a great workflow enhancement.

Also, rendering seems very interesting.

should decide to try this software, seems very promising.

did you see what he does with sculpting? the implemented really a lot of things from zbrush. Also probably bodypaint will play a giant role here. cant wait..
This software is amazing.

The only issue for me is... cinema is another software :D the only idea of learning a new software fell me sick

but rendering seems very fast and simple (argh... mental ray...), output look very nice, body paint look great and also rigging and autorigging seems a great solution, and from what I read around the net cinema stability is legendary

GUI seems too coloured for my taste

:)

Another point: Maxon add other minor features but they don't publicize it in the major release selling points, like renewed xpresso interface (seems more "sexy" now)

AD used putting bug fixes as news, or even in SI2013 I read a cryptic "modelling improvement" , where is? After a bit of consideration, I understood they intend the addition of 3dsm interaction mode like a improvement in modelling workflow, this make me :))

hehe I know how to use that damn software:) I discontinued using it many years ago for it was more expensive than Maya an it still is! Matarial system was a joke, modeling tools were crap and I don't know what they did to it after my departure:) Sculpting tools really someting maybe I should take a look at C4D again who knows maybe they can change my mind maybe autodesk will after the release of new version of SI:)

Definitely AD releases looks like hotfixes compared to Cinema, Modo, Houdini and Lightwave ones ...

since the last release of Softimage was the search for a new product which has not stop develop. Look at new features in one release, we have similar amount for a 3-4 years.
Was surprised of Lightwave. Began to look for products that were previously considered not serious.

About Lightwave, I think they need more, only some new feature cannot compensate what appear an obsolete code and a poor flux data (also workflow seems to me a bit weird, rendering in a application, then import in another...

About Cinema, really don't know nothing about, but is one of the big application, an all around generic software, and different from modo, they have just a mature, full feature set software so I think the effort put by maxon in this two release was very big.

In any case, what I feel from LW, Modo and Cinema owner is a passionate effort for their software

I had to animate a character in C4D a few days a go. I'll never do that again, unless to save a kitten or a puppy.

As I wrote I have not any experience about, what I like is the idea of all in one application (modelling, sculpt paint, render etc.)

Can you elaborate a bit your experience in cinema?

There are so many things that id like to see in Soft from cinema. Fact that you tried to animate a Character with it and didnt like could have many reasons.
Dont think it can easily compete with maya or xsi for character animation, but its not bad either. Also the rigging system got a major update recently.
All in one it has a lot of more modern and working features than softimage, especially in things you do daily which started to be annoying in soft and never fixed by AD.
And i could say the same about rendering in softimage :p

Considering what updates we get on year basis, its a shame really to be under AD roof. We'll get a new designed button to "Send to" other application this year, and they call it new feature.
Watch it.

You cant deny that the amount of features/quality/stability/updates that Maxon did (but not only maxon, even pixologic, sidefx, luxology) is kinda impressive compared to AD.
AD development and updates is dead. For the amount of money we pay its kinda insulting and depressing to look at other software houses at the same time.

well, exactly for these three, I think you can stay with Modo...

C4d traditionaly had advantage in 'easy to use' motion graphics. Let's say, I'm able to make setup, enough easy for compositing people to do simple changes, like another text or so ( while with SI ICE there is a risk of broken vacation because of change in weekly motion graphics, nobody except me knows how to change the animated text from 20% to 33% :) )
It's also very easy to learn the basic usage in C4d, but advanced, like espresso ot thinking particles, both are far bellow of amazing interaction of Softimage ICE ( maybe you don't take ICE in this way, but believe me, ICE is most 'artist friendly' compared to any similar system). Old C4d renderer is fast and stable, but doesn't shine when it comes to radiosity, new one has "correct" path tracing, but it's slow. Not easy to fill the gap between two - while in Modo, you just switch between IR and Monte Carlo, having the same visual result.
Other than mentioned motion graphics, hardly I can see the advantage. Nice that they are improving Espresso, anyway.
For game assets, if C4d still has only one UV available, don't know what to say...

For key-frame animation, rigging, simulation, other than SI or Maya, I think first station is Blender. AFAIK Blender is only "non-Softimage" app, having a parallel system of global-local transforms, You can key constrained transform to local one, you can read local rotation driven by IK and drive something else with it (intermediate bones for example). Deformation modifiers are well organized and balanced, it has quaternion rotations. Of course there is out-of-the-box auto rigging system. Playback is fast. Blender also has a full voxel-based smoke simulation and rendering. Cloth simulation is able to pull out a huge mesh.

Simulation in Modo and C4d relies on Bullet - not bad at all, but not enough for complex cloth or like. Rigging in both is a bad copy of Maya or SI - Modo is more like Maya, C4d is more like SI - but, just a bad copy.. a few small improvements here and there, keying or so, but nothing significant. Slow playback, problems with revisions, small user experience...

In short, Modo could be master for rendering, C4d for motion graphics, Blender for key-frame animation, rigging and simulations. So you can build your suite :) )

Of course, all what I said is very personal, please don't fight against this :)
