The impression I get from the way Autodesk struggles with Softimage is that they still do not know what to do with the product, where to place it etc. Maybe something like this materializes once Softimage 2010 is actually released. I wouldn't hold my breath, though... X( ;)

ye it seams that maya is the vfx package, max is games...max design is architecture....and softimage is an inconvenience, they snapped up softimage when the package was starting to look like a major competitor to both vfx and games and now they dont want to take to much attention away from the other money spinners. I hope I am wrong but it really appears to be the case right now.
I wonder in market share what kind of usage softimage has?

As I stated a while back on XSIBase I really don't think the status or potential of Softimage to become a real competitor to Autodesk's products had anything to do with the buyout. Avid wanted/needed to sell and at the price they sold Softimage for it was relatively speaking "a steal". So my guess would be, that Autodesk bought Softimage because it was "cheap" and they hadn't at that time really thought of the consequences yet and as a result are as of yet still struggling with the question, what to "do" with this newly acquired software, how to fit it in their total product line... :-?
