I read on some other forum the trailer contains too much information on the story already,
so I decided not to watch it yet... x_x
BTW: I moved this topic from "News" to "Open Discussion", I hope you won't mind... :-

To be honest, I wasn't that impressed about the whole thing.
It looks like a game trailer that they spend serious money and time on.

From what I understood is that you'll have to see it in 3D-vision. There was a 20 minutes preview in Amsterdam about two months ago, and that apparently blew all viewers away.

I have to admit, they did a hell of a job creating the environments, but I'm not sure about the blue guys. The scene in the hospital just felt a little bit too much Jar-Jar Binks.

But that's just me, maybe I'm disappointed after all the "it will bring a new era of CG" hype :-ss

your defo not the only one, i agree with you on the blue guys, the size and look of them dosnt lend itself well to the believability of it, colour also makes it jar a bit for me. but i guess that seeing it in 3d(which in my opinion is great but a film should be able to stand alone from 3d)might help with the "feeling of being totally immersed" of the whole thing?

still its a fantastic acheavment ether way.

...huge disappointment over here too...cg, never the less how much money they throw at that problem, still doesn´t work the way they want it to work. Trying to mix live action with CG might be a way, but the CG humans always jump into my eye very quickly. Avatar might have a great story at least (I hope so, honestly..), but the looks by now not blew me away. One of the better game-cinematic....and yes, tha characterdesign of the blue people...reminded me strongly on somthing I had seen before: back to gaya :)) Take a look HERE

hmmmm...... i'm slightly moving to "this might not suck too bad".

But it's still Cameron, who's story lines mostly sink like the Titanic somewhere down the line :ymdevil:

true, his storys are fairly generic/ mehh
this has the classic look of man struggling with life man overcomes his deamons> man falls for woman> woman falls for man> man louses woman> man redeems himself and wins back woman....all rolled together with braveheart/aliens....its generic but well see it anyway im sure...and probably love it like the rest of his movies!

i for one am really looking forward to it... i don't really care if its not as good as it should be. I'm a huge sci-fi fan and the only way we're going to get more good sci-fi is if we show our support for the decent ones that come around. this has been a good year for it with films like District 9, and soon Avatar.

Also, i've said this before... but good sci-fi movies really don't have to have much to be good... they merely need to challenge the average person's perceptions of what is really possible. I don't care where a film lies along the uncanny valley if it will give me a little bit of something to think about. Granted, a very crappy looking movie can be a distraction, and a very poor plot can leave you bored... but so far Avatar looks like it'll at least grab your attention enough to keep you awake... and it has potential for a lot more than that. The visuals are a bit different than i think i lot of people are ready to accept, and the plot looks like it'll challenge a few people who are less initiated to sci-fi concepts. Even if the plot doesn't surprise me in any way... I'll be glad if it merely surprises other people. Blockbuster sci-fi movies have a way of making the average person accept geeky ideas that they would never have given a moments thought otherwise... making the world a geekier place to be.

Thats all right with me.

GEEK POWER!!!! \m/

well id have to call myself a liar if i didnt say i really enjoyed it!

The story was quite safe i must admit, as in a story of an outsider gaining acceptance(similar to dances with wolves...last samura and so on) sprinkled with the old classic of boy meets girl, boy pisses off girl, boy wins girl back with gusto! nothing wrong with that in my opinion. if i was going to pump 400million into a film id at least want a formula that you know works.

cg...was quite better than the trailers i have seen in the lead up to the films release. but i did know it was cg and i did feel detached at times and i blame myself as a cg artist for this as i was constantly looking and thinking how they might have done certain things(and a lot of the time shaking my head in awe!)
one scene i must praise was the banishes flying through the sky cliffs...probably one of the first times since i was a kid that i felt envious of the characters on screen(apart from bill murray snuggling up to scarlet johanson in lost in translation...i cant but feel id have made better use of the situation than he did...mmmm), i wanted to fly!

the 3D was tastefully put to use with very little IN YOUR FACE stuff, and one time i did find myself reaching for a burning ember floating just outside in my peripheral vision...nice
all in all...very enjoyable.
