a.maize - winner of VES award

Post by Hirazi Blue » 11 Feb 2012, 10:21

Apparently ICE can do popcorn too...

The short film a.maize won the VES Award in the category "Outstanding Visual Effects in a Student Project" at (...) [the] 10th Annual VES Awards in Los Angeles. The short film and FMX 2011 trailer, that was created by Falko Paeper, Roman Kaelin und Florian Wittmann, was one of three entries from the Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg. a.maize was chosen as best of six nominated films at the VES Award ceremony. The VES Awards are annually bestowed by the Visual Effects Society (VES) and count among the most prestigious distinctions in the realm of Visual Effects.

Co-Director Roman Kaelin said:
"We wanted the FMX trailer to showcase how the conference brings people and ideas together, and filling the city of Stuttgart with giant popcorn pieces was a way for us to convey amazement and wonder. We created the popcorn pieces with Softimage and particularly with ICE (the Softimage Interactive Creative Environment). Winning the VES Student Award was a complete surprise, and we are honored and very happy."

There's no sense of weight when people touches it, although popcorn throws a car up to few meters in the air... I'm feel cheated

What graphic software packages did you use for the entirety of this project?
Our main pipeline was Softimage and Fusion. Other than that, we used ZBrush, Mudbox, PFTrack, Photoshop and After Effects.

Of all the 3D packages, why did you guys select SI as your primary creation software?
Cause we think it's the best one.
