Center of Interest?

Post by gaboraa » 20 Jan 2012, 14:12

Why Center of Interest which is a camera property is grayed out in SI 2012? By the way I cannot understand why there is such a parameter. When I hit F button to center the camera to an object, my hardships begin cause camera can only move close to the object but cannot pass through it. Any idea to overcome this issue?

Not entirely sure, I think the "Center of Interest" is greyed out, because it is linked to the actual distance to the "Camera Interest", so you would have to delete the "Camera Interest" first to "ungrey" it? :-\

Hirazi is right, deleting the Camera Interest or the (Direction Cns on the camera ) makes that parameter writable.

Center of Interest is disabled if the camera is interest constrained.
A camera actually has a read-only "Interest Constrained" parameter, and the camera ppg checks that parameter to determine whether or not to enable the Distance to Interest parameter. I assume that under the hood XSI maintains the state of that "Interest Constrained" parameter.

I recorded some videos to show what my problem exactly is. In SI, if your object is in the center of the scene, you can move camera close to it but you cannot pass through the object, camera suddenly stops moving forward but in Maya there is no such restriction, you can move your camera freely. This annoys me especially when I do some modeling.

What works in app A might not behave the same in app B, there's always some wins and losses in workflow.

I have lived enough to understand this:) What I asked was, is there any solution for this issue? Or simply are there other users who suffer from the same issue that I have? In SI 2010 and 2011 I could enter any desired value to the camera's center of interest section but in 2012 I cannot enter any value cause it is grayed out. It was annoying back than to edit the numbers again and again but now there is nothing I can do about it.

I see....

unfortunately i don't have 2010 or 2011 installed anymore to check this (new pc + os), running 2012 only atm.

afaik there's no 'trick' to do what you want in camera or user cam behavior, maybe someone else knows?

Hopefully you wont mind me saying this, but that is kinda weird preference. In maya, I believe Center of Interest changes itself once you past its position in global space. I appreciate the fact that XSI does not do this adjustment because I expect my cam to always move towards the center when scrolling, not past it...

Anyway, if you delete Center of Interest null, it will allow you to manually set the value in ppg. It works, though, its not displayed in viewport.

I saw same question was asked at the mailing list and for I don't use mailing list, I want to revive this thread for getting attention of the developers in here also. I really want that problem to be changed.
