Is it possible to assign a specific image in an image sequence to a specific particle?

ok, this is a good start. I can get it to work in the viewport by screwing with the scale numbers in the time reference but this won't render correctly. The image in Brents illustration does not go into what to do with the time controls. my instincts tell to set the scale to zero, but that doesn't work. any suggestions?

Just did a simple little test and it seems to me the "Scale" under "Time Reference" (I assume that's the "Scale" you mean), should be set to "1" (at least that's how my little recreation of Stephen Blair's example works here on my end).
