Planet Dinosaur - Building A Dinosaur

Post by Hirazi Blue » 15 Sep 2011, 18:10

Very impressive stuff coming from the BBC: Planet Dinosaur, apparently utilizing Softimage (or is it still XSI?) in its production. A nice little video on the making of can be found on the BBC Website (if you live in "their" area). If you sadly do not live in that area, going to youtube and copying and pasting the title of this thread into the search field there, might possibly help too...
:p

CGSociety did a Production Focus about this too, but seemed to have failed to mention all the software used...
(There seem to be two embedded videos in this Production Focus, but the first one failed to load in my browser, so I can't say for certain, if it's the same making of, mentioned above, or something completely different.)
Stay safe, sane & healthy!

with some proxy fiddling the BBC website is accessible ;)
If you use FF search for foxyproxy.

Software used was Softimage and ZBrush for 3D, Arnold for almost all rendering and NukeX for compositing.
ICE was also used a lot for crowds and environments afaik.

some info kindly provided by Lawrence Pankhurst (Jellyfish Pictures) on the Arnold malinglist:
We completed 180 mins of full CGI (a feature film pretty much).
We achieved this task in under 18 months with a team of about 50 people(max)
We chose Nuke to composite and finish the 2300 shots.
3 hours including Motion GFX

21 sequences and 21 different environments, 1/2-1 day to light each shot and 1 day comp
Each sequence had on average 110 shots
It's odd the software is not mentioned, I'm still waiting for it to show up on the AREA........ L-)

We can only really put an article on the AREA that mentions software used when we have permission from the various parties involved. Even though there is footage of Softimage and zbrush being used, there hasn't been any official and specific mention of any of the software used, and we have to respect that.
