Glass on neon, trying to achieve something similar.

Post by pdesopo » 12 Sep 2011, 06:40

I was trying to have something like in the following image:

First I started with a simple phong, some transparencies and a neon light inside the tube:

Then I tried with a glass shader and a volume effect:

The glass is wrong and the neon light is far from being similar to the reference.
Kinda hard for me as these are my first steps with SI.
I'll look for some good readings about glass with MR, but if anyone in the meantime has some tips to share that would be very welcome.

Thanks

Does the glass have some thickness to it? You might want to make sure it does if you plan on rendering with refraction. You could try to create the neon part using the Incidence shader. Plug it to transparency port, to achieve the soft edge.

Or create two tubes. The inner one bit smaller, add additional color or constant with glow and the glass tube outside with glass material.
