Umm.. am i missing something here?

Post by Gith » 19 Aug 2011, 09:15

Hi!

Recently i've tried a bit of game developing on my own, so i dig out the web and found out that there are mainly two big packages available for creating Your own games. Unreal Development Kit (UDK) and Unity3D. I assumed that when having Softimage, which last time i've seen after aquisition, was aimed at game development, it should be no problem. What suprised me was the fact that there was COMPLETELY NO SUPPORT for current releases of SI. UDK has support for XSI 6.5 and Unity for XSI 5.x. Of course both of the platforms offer importing FBX' which as most of us know are somewhat broken in latest versions of SI. Now. I entered the Autodesk website and to my amusement there is no information about our program on the main site. Top that, even when i clicked on the Product section on the main page. Am i missing something or is everything is just fine the way it should be? :)

edit: oh, sorry! Actually there is a tiny icon of SI on the main Autodesk page inside the box of "Entertainment Creation Suite", how clever is that!

Hi Gith, where you been? this is old news we have all complained about this many times already, the SI folk who frequent here have no powers to change this and claim justification that SI is in the minority therefore it doesn't belong up there with the likes of Max or Maya, based purely on the number of seats sold. We all know SI is more awesome than that, its just convincing the rest of the world...? :)

If it bothers you that much, fire off an email to Autodesk themselves , if enough disgruntled SI users do it they may change its online marketing status out of sheer pity or annoyance....
Gossip is what no one claims to like, but everybody enjoys.

ActorX for UDK works with Soft2011. I haven't tried with 2012.
For Unity, you can export out an FBX or Collada, and I think it works fine.
This is all just for static meshes. Not sure how well it works for animated things.

It is true, unfortunately Autodesk left behind Softimage...or, better to say, they show Softimage like a plugin for 3ds/Maya because of ICE...
This is nuts, Softimage is way better than those other packages in more or less everything...but 3ds and Maya are still the top sellers among those who don't want to try a very good alternative, so thats why Softimage will never receive the popularity that it deserve...

Regards game developing same thing, I worked with both UDK and Unity3D, you have to use FBX/DAE/ASE, but I always end up having problems ( UV not correctly exported, RIG not recognized, and so on... ) so at the end of the day you realize that usually you spend lot of time dealing with stupid exporting error and is really time consuming...

I would pay to have a decent ( and updated) exporter for Softimage to be used in UDK/Unity/Cryengine, but unfortunately this is the situation...so sad :(

there was some discussion about this on the user list recently. FBX export from Softimage 2012 into Unreal seems to work fine, but there was just some scale settings that you have to be aware of. I have seen people talk about problems with FBXs form Softimage 2010 and 2011, but with 2012 I haven't had any major problems at all. I haven't tried Unity or CryEngine yet though.
