Anisotropic Pattern Effect

Post by Maximus » 10 May 2011, 20:25

hey guys, i was wondering does anyone know how to achieve this effect with the same control with architectural/mia_material?

http://www.xsi-blog.com/archives/197

i'm struggling to get this result, without using textures..is it even possible without t2s illumination shader since there isnt a compatible version for soft 2012?

thanks

not in the same way, I think. MIA utilizes some existing texture space and gray scale texture for orientation, instead of world-space 3d vector. T2s has a Daniel Rind's Deriver inside...
With MIA, you can start with this: apply texture projection to plane, put gradient texture (not mixer, just texture) for rotation, set it to 'radial rainbow', set anisotropy over 1. Then you'll figure out what texture you need. MIA approach is more 'artist-friendly', imho.

Thanks Mathaeus, i'm starting to get something actually :)
Didnt know about Deriver, gonna take a look at it too.

yes, its predefined but you can use different options with the mia_material:

for the channel/texprojektion, use this as inputs like your needs

-1: the base rotation follows the local object coordinate system.
-2: the base rotation follows the bump basis vectors
-3: the base rotation follows the surface derivatives
-4: the base rotation follows a vector placed in state>tex prior to calling mia_material

use the mia_mat and not the arch mat. its the "anisotropy channel" option, default is set to "-1". here you can use the options you need.

Ok I am still struggling with this lol
I found some weird issue so i'm gonna try to post and get some help here.

Scene setup: environment + hdri
photo exposure shader
1 point light
mia_material in metal mode with ior 30, brdf fresnel.
Nothing fancy :D

alright here is my issue.

-First render: no anisotropy, default settings

Image

-Second render: playin with some settings. aniso 0.1 and rotation 0.4

Image

-Third render: if i switch the anisotropy channel to -2 i get this weird error in rendering

Image

-Last render: here i tried to plug a gradient map to the rotation and the channel is set again at -2, weird rendering again

Image

Now some questions:
I've noticed that the anisotropy only working on the highlight (specular) so if i turn off the specular from the point light it vanishes. Isnt supposed to work on the whole reflections? So it should distort the reflected hdri?

Someone has actually managed to get a working anisotropic pattern for metals like the one from this page http://www.xsi-blog.com/archives/197 ?
with mia_mat or archiectural. I cant get it work

Thanks, Max

I tried to follow this tutorial too http://materialism-blog.blogspot.it/201 ... erial.html but everything fell apart when switching to channel -2 as you can see..

Hi Maximus,

Are you using the Mia_Material factory node from Soft?
Have you tried Mia_Material Advance from Felix Geremus?

set "Softimage" "true"

Yeah tried Architectural, Mia_material, and mia_material_advanced from Felix, all same results. I'm doing someething wrong probably

are you using the channel -2? Cause thats where i get issues, with channel -1 it works just fine, as soon as i switch at -2 it gives me those square render errors.
I'll try to setup a scene, its just a sphere on a plane tho :)

Also what texture did you plug into the rotation slot?

i uploaded this scenefile, the anisomap is in pictures folder. insert a hdr of your choice in the env and you can see whats going on. i used the builtin_bsdf arch_comp shader for this but the mia illum node i used in the image above is already in rendertree.

Thanks for the scene, but the builting_bsdf_architectural_comp renders black for some reason, it never worked for me..its just pure black even in the apple preview shaderball.
The other 2 nodes work, the architectural and the bsdf_architectural.

edit: i had to change the code in the bsdf.mi apparently something was wrong there, i have an ugly interface now but at least it works :)

Thanks Kzin

p.s. mind sharing your bsdf.mi code? :D

Maximus,

Maybe you are experiencing the issue explained on this thread on Mental Ray forum:

http://forum.mentalimages.com/showthrea ... light=BSDF

It look like you have some NaN issue within your render. AD did a hot fix on Maya 2013 to address the problem. (SP2 I think)
MAYA-15595 Failure when connecting mental ray texture file to mia_material

Hey Kzin your material is really top notch, ive been looking for awhile now on how to do a proper anisotropic effect. Im just kinda confused on the rendertree setup, if possible for you to elaborate on that a bit, and also how did you manage to do that anisotropic texture in photoshop ? :)

Thanks!
