sun and sky doesn't like Linear Workflow???

Post by Caveman » 27 Mar 2011, 12:41

Hi! I am getting these weird outlines along the objects, when I am using the Sun and Sky with Color Management Turned on.

Any suggestions?

Regards.

dunno exactly but i guess its something related to alpha on matte shadow, what are you tryin to achieve?

Nothing important. I was just testing the mip matte shadow when I saw these weird things. I removed the matte shadow material from the ground plane to see if that was the cause, but no good. Please check the attached .7zip file.
Thanks for replying.

yeah i've checked it, but i dunno why you plugged the sky to the matte shadow anyway, also that white outline goes away if you remove the alpha from the background in the matteshadow shader, but remains into the ball.

dont understand whast going on, i dont use this setup with matte shadow, not getting what you want to do anyway :)

Granted I have been performing weird experiments with the matte shadow :)) , but whats up with the soccer ball? 8-}. If such things happen in a production scene, people will go crazy.

not really because the preference gamma are just "Visual" feedback, Softimage wont apply the gamma if you use those checks, hence why i always leave them unchecked and control everything with photographic exposure :)

But Zap said to use the Color Management in Softimage. Guess Zap is not aware of all this issues in Softimage. I will turn them off now. Thanks Maximus.

the problem is that phys sky is multipled by its alpha. You can do one of following
-change ur render settings so rgb is clipped above alpha
-disable showing sky in bg via environment node
-do a physical_sky->color to scalars->rgba combine->environment shaders trick to set Alpha=1
-it might be a bug or unwanted feature so best thing you can do is to submit ticket to ad support

also you can plug sky to matte bg...I did crazy things with matte's bg port, like raytracing, and it worked (much or less)

well its not that my way is the right one! i'm just used to work in that way, i have only the last 2 options checked in the preferences, wich are Shader balls and ui widgets, so when i work on creating materials i have a feedback of what will be in gamma 2.2, then i always add a photographic exposre with gamma 2.2.

Now if i want to use linear workflow and do postwork later i put gamma 1 to photoexposure and render it out as .exr
if its just a quick render i dont need to postwork a lot i just leave the 2.2 in photo exposure.

Most of the time i had the other 2 preferences active wich are Render Regions, Pass and Preview, it ended up doubling the gamma, because i always forget i have a visual feedback of gamma 2.2 due to those preferences.

Its just my personal workflow, you can work with all the options checked if you remember to not double your gamma later :)

Thanks origin it works. Definitely it's an unwanted thing[BUG]. For the last few weeks Softimage is behaving erratically with me and Maya is working like a charm. And some months back it was the other way around. :-l

BTW how to change the render settings so rgb is clipped above alpha???

Color Channel Clipping in the mental ray render options.
