keep translation active

How do i keep the translate tool active and make another selection.
I have tried holding down the space bar ,but it is not working it deselects everytime.

assuming you have the translate tool locked (press and release the "v" button), press and hold one of the following:
- T, to rectangle select points
- E, to rectangle select edges
- I, to raycast select edges
- U, to raycast select polygons
- Y, to rectangle select polygons
- SPACE, to rectangle select objects

release the key after the selection is done and you're back to your previous tool: the translate tool.

You might also want to set your preferences: File > Preferences, expand Tools, click Transform, and set Click Outside Manipulator to "Select Tool".

I am slowly getting around in xsi , but starting to see it is a great app.
