lock an object

Post by scrog » 01 Dec 2010, 22:01

how do i make an object unselectable?
Also can i make a curve display differently? I need to use it as a reference to cut an eight sided hole into the top of a 12 sided cylinder.
should i use boolean. most other apps make a mess out of your geometry when using boolean.

In answer to your first question only:
"Selectability" is a parameter on the "Visibility" property editor.
In the Explorer "Visibility" is one of the items listed under your object...

As for the other question, it should do no harm just to try it out.
Or you might create two ngons made of curves each one with the desired number of corners, select them both and create an extrusion object with the "curves to mesh" tool.

Will give the curve thing a try.

In reference to question one , I don't know what i was thinking I have access to turn on and off selection in the layer manager.

Yes, you have. The beauty of the "Visibility" property on every object, however, is that it lets you turn of visibility & selectability on a per object basis, while the layer manager only works for whole layers. If you want to make a group of objects unselectable, you can also put them all in one "Group" and set the selectability option for the whole group in one go...
So many ways to do all this stuff, but that's actually a good thing... ;)

Thank you, all the info I have learned has made xsi not so scary as it was a couple a weeks ago. The work flow is somewhat different than what i am accustomed to.
