max has the option to constrain the movement of an element ( to face/edge).
how do i do this in xsi?

Although I'm not entirely sure what you mean, I think what you're looking for can be found

Instead of using the ref mode like suggested in the area thread, you could use the tweak tool too which should require a few less steps:
-Activate twek tool (Make sure tweak tool transform manipulators an on (left button in viewport), and the other two buttons are set to off)
-Left click the component (point, polygon or edge) once you'd like to transform, this will show the manipulators
-Middle-click the component you'd like as the reference
For transforming along a plane you'll need to have set "Axes and Plane handles" as the manipulator style in Preferences->Tools->Transform->Translate/Scale interaction style. The others seem not to work with the tweak tool

The tweak tool and mid click worked great.

cool btw I found out during testing this that the reference that is set using the tweak tool is also being used by the normal srt transform manipulators. allows for a quick way to set this.
