Ship on Ocean test.

Post by Werner » 17 Nov 2010, 07:42

Hi Guys and girls!

Here is a test we did a while back. It's short but we had fun putting this one together.
I'm still working on more water splashes and spray around the ship, but for now this is it.

Erik Kruger - Ship modeling
Martin Sen - Additional ship modeling and texturing
Werner Ziemerink - Additional ship modeling, Ocean modeling and texturing, Lighting and compositing

Looks like a ship on an ocean to me... :D
Could you please tell us a little more about the CG process(es) involved? ;)
I'm guessing ICE (& aaOcean?)

Thanks Hirazi.

good eye. It is indeed a ship on an ocean ;)

Well, everything was poly modeled in Softimage 2010 SP1. For the ocean we used Amaan Akrams awesome aaocean ICE compound.
I could not get the normal map ocean stuff to look right, so we ended up using very high res meshes in the final simulation.

Shading on the ocean was achieved by using proximity weight maps to separate white water close to the ship from the blue ocean water.
As for the particle splashes, we used Splash on collision (ICE) with spawn trails to get higher density particle counts around the ship mesh.

Birds flying over the ship are normal ICE particles with animated instance geometry.

I did the comp in After Effects, and think that a real comp artist would do a way better job, but time was limited and it was a test after all.

I love the warm look of the sun washing over the top right of frame, great work guys!
Nothing's too difficult to achieve, it just takes longer...

Yep nice job, looks 100% not cg. Ocean's one big grid or instanced clones ?

Very impressive, nice sense of scale and love the water shading, particularly in the wake.

Thanks!

We used 4 aaocean grids, because of the proximity weightmaps, we could not use clones. This made rendering easier.

Nice test indeed. I like the foam, as well, thats often most tricky part. What kind of procedural did you find works best for the foam? Or you decided to do the foam with particles alltogether?

4 with different aaocean settings? How did you blend them together /seams/ ?

aaOcean tiles by default. It's a great set of compounds.

all 4 tiles hade the same settings. Viewport was heavy but it rendered fine.

As for foam on water...I took foam pics and stitched together a tillable texture map, that only showed up in the 100% weight value of the proximity fade compound.
The water splashes was a mission...not enough particles, so we had to do multiple passes with different seed values.

Very impressive work !

It would be great if you could write a making of about foam on the water, and splashes around the boat... I would love to reproduce it, but as I'm not an ICE user, your description isn't detailed enough for me.

Thanks in advance if you find a moment for it.

Is it possible to see a wireframe of the interaction of the ship and the ocean?
Cheers
