The following message (after the one asking you if you want to send an error report) has (almost) convinced me to buy it... =))

I also installed DaVinci Lite but i didn't found many flexibility in formats. Maybe because it is still in beta.

Same feeling here with davinci, couldn't read most of the tiff's rendered with arnold (black), have to investigate further.
Maybe we should make a davinci thread...

Man, this program looks great. Downloading right now to try it.

As for editing program, I may return to Avid perhaps (been a Avid editor for 5 years) or just try this one: https://hitfilm.com/

In any case ... everyday is looking better to drop Adobe piece of crap programs. Yesterday I tried SumatraPDF and man, beautiful! It's just a PDF reader but Adobe Reader was stalling my system with some ebooks and magazines. SumatraPDF blazes through. Adobe must be crazy, every version is heavier and slower.

I bought it and I'm playing with ormr for a while now, for me it's quite stable, for a beta it is very complete, it's great to be able go back to your selection, change feather settings, change brush style etc.
Some more brush options like krita would be nice.
The tga I saved had an alpha.

I think a subforum for cheap, free and opensource software would be nice, there's so much going on these days!

Krita is very good. Especially on Linux Mint. Up till now their windows version have not had the same speed. They have however come a long way. I am just sad they didn't make the KickStarter for the Mac version ;(

I loaded a huge psd file with lots of layers, and it (quite memory efficiently) loaded everything, requiring only a few adjustments to compensate differences.

(a file which would not have been so large to begin with, had it benefited from non-destructive edits, such as embedded original layer backups before changes, etc.. )

As for the quirks;
I Missed how you can ctrl-click to select the topmost -visible- (non transparent) part of a layer, to select (or move) the layer in PS.

Selecting a hidden layer makes that layer roughly the same color as a non-hidden layer (in the layer panel), making it hard to see what layer is selected.

Fixed ScrollBars Size is non-representative of proportional visible area size, if a panel goes beyond screen, don't know how far down it goes without scrolling.

Would be great to select a bunch of strokes and edit them together.

Not very Space efficient (huge) toolbars & interface glyphs, while perhaps great for very hires displays.
(guess I should post these things on their forums)

Can't seem to easily view/edit masks, and the (otherwise great) color range can only show marching-ants outilne as feedback (unless i'm missing something)
(which is my biggest thing)

Otherwise, it's already pretty complete, and the non-destructiveness is just amazing!
(non-destructiveness .. what a novel idea, whished there was an easy-to-use yet powerful 3d app with the same undelying concept.. oh but there IS! but... )

By the way, for those of you with Wacoms who happen to like "Mouse mode" with their pens,
as what may have had you revert to "pen mode", MouseMode doesn't work with QT intefaces Such as Nuke, Ormr and others.

(With Wacom and QT still always saying it's because of the other.)

BUT!, you can download Autohotkey, http://ahkscript.org/download/
and use this .ahk script to start your QT apps.

Code: Select all

runwait, net stop TabletServicePen
sleep, 1000
run, "C:\Program Files\Ormr\Ormr.exe"
sleep, 2000
runwait, net start TabletServicePen
Replace appropriate path to your app with QT interface, and the service name which depends on your wacom model.. (you can find it in your running services )

It will stop the service, start your app, and re-start the service.

You can change the timing in milliseconds (currently 2000) to restart the service depending on how long you app takes to start-up.
(service start needs to happen after interface is up)

Then your pen will work in your QT app as much as anywhere, with the freedom of mouse mode! (with a few seconds pause of the pen on app startup)

You can then create a shortcut to that .ahk script, while pointing the shortcut's icon to your app path, and then always use that to start it.
Cheers!

Same thing with ZBrush and 3dConnexion. No drivers after years and years of pointing fingers (well one experimental one that I hear doesn't work very well). Hate when that happens.

I haven't had time to try Ormr myself yet but my texture artist coworker was really interested. He listed some things he would still need though.
-scripting (I understand it was coming. At least there was some talk about it in the kickstarter page)
-smart objects (I don't think you need those with the nondestructive workflow)
-adjustment layers (does Ormr really not have adjustment layers? If not, this goes to my list too)
-animation tools (I guess this wasn't that important but it would be nice)

Yes, especially that Photohsop is hardy the most extensible
Jho wrote:-smart objects (I don't think you need those with the nondestructive workflow)
I think you guessed right, and layers seem to natively reference external files with an option auto-update upon source file change, to which you can further create dynamic instances in your comp.
Jho wrote:-adjustment layers (does Ormr really not have adjustment layers? If not, this goes to my list too)
Not unlike what you suggested for smart-layers, the unecessity of adjustment-layers was also my assumption as well,
but the 'effects stack' work on a per-layer basis, so if you want to, say; procedurally do something to all layers below,
you either can't do it, or it is'nt as immediately obvious, so like your friend I can see how this can be a biggie.
Jho wrote:-animation tools (I guess this wasn't that important but it would be nice)
- Animation YES! and it's procedural nature probably makes it very eligible for that and would indeed be very cool in that type of environment!!

Just got a mail from Sad Cat Software that they've decided to rebrand the product, now officially naming it "Bloom".
While "Ormr" is a unique name that works reasonably well in print, it is very difficult to convey in speech, being both quite tough to pronounce and to recognize.

So today, after a long and thoughtful selection process, we are renaming Ormr to Bloom. This also means that unfortunately, the cutesy red dragon that was associated with Ormr has to go, and we have a new logo to replace it(...).
They could've easily keep the "cutesy red dragon" though, they just could've named it Bloom too.
I've known dragons with weirder names...

Unfortunately it's a deal breaker, cutesy red dragon should have been kept...
