Last video has nice explanation what are Fields and what can be done with VDB's.

That volume mesh modeling is pretty cool.

They're nice updates, but I hope they picked up on multi threading and a more robust scene/RAM management system.
When stuff gets more complex, it' ca get sluggish very quickly.
And despite the more steep learning curve of Houdini, I would still move to H for most of the stuff shown. More flexibility in the end.

Good and they are the only DCC with matchmoving, tracking - but i feel they are going too slow.
At least one of my pet peaves - deleting polygons but letting their point remain seems to have been brought to XXI century and we can now have Softimage behavior, delete the polygon and be done...

Blender has matchmoving/tracking afaikBullit wrote: 10 Aug 2018, 06:55 Good and they are the only DCC with matchmoving, tracking - but i feel they are going too slow.

But yes, stuff like that is beyond annoying, and at some point will mess with your scenes. Good to see that pointbug finally fixed.

Yeah it does, i even know it did but i forgot. Nevertheless seems not so complete as Cinema 4D one.
Was not a bug was a feature like some Maxon guys told... but they could not get away with it for ever.

Re: Cinema 4D R20 announced
It's looking like standard VDB stuff, well known from Houdini. IMO that molded engine parts example nicely shows how far the voxel modeling is able to go, or not. Polygons of some cylinder used for horizontal tube, are still recognizable after VDB processing. I'd say, VDB is still great for making irregular shapes created by nature, like stones, mud, snow, ice. When it comes to man made things, it is limited to bumpy surfaces like molded or welded parts, cast iron, some rubber shoe sole, so on. Little problem with VDB is a generic nature, somehow typical to everything popularized by Houdini. Can do everything, but probably nothing competitive to specialized solutions. Precisely for modeling, VDB is a way slower and way more memory hungry than zBrush for example, bulit-in VDB mesher is behind zB Decimation Master. Anyway, nice for c4d people to have this thing.

Yes. I winder if integrated with Instant Meshes would improve this much more.

Re: Cinema 4D R20 announced
Yeah it should. In case of VDB you just leave ''adaptivity'' to zero in VDB mesher and proceed the full res to Instant Meshes. In that moulded example, adaptivity is really high. Instant Meshes can do quads usable for subdivs, OpenVDB mesher can't.Bullit wrote: 13 Aug 2018, 11:29 Yes. I winder if integrated with Instant Meshes would improve this much more.
While from my experience, there were cases when Instant Meshes just failed to create anything usable. Anyway, rarely.

This is a very good presentation of VDB modeling, fields and what can be done with it:

If someone want to test R20 Demo is out , it gives 42 days with saving function enabled if you activate that option in the demo. You can just run it infinitely i think without saving enabled.
