Two things ... how come a powerful package as Houdini comes with only a 390mb install archive as 3ds Max/Maya has what, 3Gigs?

The other thing is that they launch the new version and the trial/apprentice is already available to test and play. TF and AD should learn this from SideFX.

You forgot about fixes coming couple times a week, not once, twice in a year ;)

Man, what a huge release.

Full list here...

The workflow enhancements are a massive step in the right direction. Animation editor feels great so far, and
everything feels faster.

This release showed us the path away from Autodesk. Brilliant work SideFX!

Yes, it looks like they really listened and than added some more. It's going to be fun playing around with H14.
Haven't been this interested in a 3D app for some time, besides XSI that is.... ;-P

Wow..congrats to the Houdini-team! Seems they have really pushed forward in certain areas.
Feels great to see at least some people that are really dedicated to their product and want to improve it.
Hopefully they will get more and more users, even ex-SI guys. They really deserve it...

cheers ;)

This is really impressive. I hope they manage to take a nice big bite out of Autodesk's market share. Not that AD cares at all but would be nice just the same.

So good to see real progress and exciting development again. I wish I had time to try it right now...I certainly will later.

Already downloaded the Indie version! Can anybody tell me, what's the best figuration for a Houdini PC? I read several posts in their forum regarding this subject, but it's a bit confusing. On one hand many things seem to be single threaded, some are multithreaded and others make good use of an additional GPU (openCL)

I wonder which is the most important aspect, especially with flip fluids, pyroFx and the new "sand solvers". I can choose between a PC with an i7 six-core (3,2Ghz) or dual six-core xeons (2,5GHz). Both systems are running the same graphic cards.

Does one profit more from a faster single core or several slower ones?

Anybody with some experience?

Cheers
Thomas

Some processes are single threaded while others multi. Rendering, as is with any rendering engine, is always multi so having slightly slower more cores is better than slightly faster fewer cores most of the time.
Double Xeon systems however are much more expensive than an i7 platform, so that's that.
