Maybe Autodesk should do like Apple Marevick, and give Softimage for free! :))

I suspect mac version of Softimage would be more likely. Would probably double the number of seats Softimage currently has!

Well ... if the cloud project work, that could happen. At the 3ds Max Expert Event, the new Max PM said the same thing about Max and Mac. There's no need to port to mac if it's going to work on the cloud.

Now ... I actually don't like that approach. Maybe in the north countries the internet is fast and reliable, but us in the south suffer from lack of everything but expensive prices! :)

We cant even stream from digital tutors properly ;(

They would need to put a cloud in more geographical regions to make that work

One thing is simulation and rendering through the net, and another, a virtual machine streamed to your browser. I don't think the last one will be usable at a professional 3DCG level anytime soon.

What?! That was very harsh specially when you've had a lot of support from the community. I remember answering you in a few threads, personal messages and even tweaking a few scripts for you. I don't know if I'll do it again.

If you want to be heared, if you are the one doing the question, then you are the one who have to take the time to explain the problem, make it clear and easy to understand with detailed info and maybe screen shots, and if possible, using standard terminology. If you can't do that, why should we try to understand your questions?

We are a small community but with a lot of active people contributing. Not all your (our) questions can be answered, sometimes we don't know the answer or don't have the time. After all, this is not a free technical support site, and nobody is in the obligation to answer.

Pay subscription and call Autodesk or your local retailer if you want proper support.

I always wondered what would come first: the death of Softimage or the complete transformation to a cloud-only approach, which BTW to me would amount to the same.
As to Softimage on a Mac: an unnamed former Software Development Manager for Softimage (hint: he works for Maya now :D ) has always been quite adamant that this was never going to happen and given the dwindling resources Autodesk spends on Softimage these days I'd hazard a guess and say this hasn't changed and will never change. IIRC, Softimage is too deeply entrenched in Microsoft code that it's a miracle they got around creating a Linux version.
Stay safe, sane & healthy!

Well ... I guess this can be a good thing! Maya users will envy our power! B-)

P.S.: They could at least get his name right. I corrected in the quote.

But if more Maya users discover the use of ICE, Soft can gain more visibility and force Autodesk to work better on it. No?

Maya always targeted large studios, left the smaller studios & freelancers in the dust, Softimage came in and lent a helping hand to smaller studios and freelancers, listened to it's user base and enhanced the software. Softimage then become the predecessor of Maya.

Maya had no interest in smaller studios and freelancers, besides as I've read, Maya was in a slump for 10+ years, bugs, workflow flaws plaque the software, only large studios with big development team could repair.

Now the Maya community is speaking, only the past two versions is Maya making progress, targeting smaller studios and freelancers, it took over 10+ years later, they now have they gone into the core of Maya and have begun fixing. You need to fix the core of any software for it to radiate out to the surface, as many Softimage users have expressed, "the core needs tinkering and fixing".

Max users feel as though they are playing second fiddle to Maya as well, although Max users love their software, sure they admire ICE, it seems most 3D packages admire ICE. Although Max user script what they need instead, I don't think the ICE tears last long in the max community.

This is going to be a rehashed comment about Houdini that others have made. Houdini market is an extreme niche market, Autodesk sees no threat against it's bad boy, Maya. In Autodesks vision, Maya can be anything they want it to be, that's why they are cleaning it up, enhancing it etc.

Softimage continues to have ICE, and as many have said in this thread and others, atleast the Softimage community still has ICE ! #:-s

The moment SideFX put some effort into enhanching modeling toolset and making animation in Houdini more "human IK" style oriented, you'll see Autodesk Panic.
Those are the only 2 factors that still keep Maya winning over Houdini on a 360° environment. Houdini is beast and probably unbeatable at what it does, doesnt really shine for character animation neither modeling.

^ You are most likely right.

Can you tell Studios and independents to drop their license of Maya overnight, no. Those same users will be pounding down Maya door asking for it to be updated. At present Maya is still leading !

Houdini is best at anything procedural, remember Houdini is plugging into Maya (recent news) so I don't believe Autodesk is fearing them at all :)
