They should have released one more sneak peek, to build more momentum.

Hi Sam,

I'm very curious to see what's new, UI wise. Hopefully some more technical workflows are slightly more hidden behind 'artist friendly' UI's......
After talking to some of the people of SideFX, during the Uebertage, it was very clear they were very interested in ideas and open to change.
So let's see what happended. :-)

But, this might be the year I'm going to dive into Houdini more seriously....

Maybe UI was the wrong thing to say. It's mostly modelling and manipulation improvements. There's even a Softimage style project maker. The overall layout is still very much Houdini though, which isn't a bad thing once you learn your way around.

Same goes for any software, obviously, even the dreaded Maya.
The main question is how long it takes to actually "learn your way around"...
;)
Stay safe, sane & healthy!

I see....

Personally I can live without the modeling enhancements, and would like to see some more 'SI style' workflows slipping in ;-)
Just to enhance the workflow a bit.

We'll wait and try it out when it comes out.

Well....... better to to do not talking about :D Anyway for small but exact example from reality. Recently I've started experiments with creating a sort of procedural stones and such things in H, everything went so so fine, interesting, nice learning exercise so on and so on. But, when tried to render with Mantra rendertime subdivs, suddenly, machine start 'boiling', entire RAM get filled, ctrl-alt-del to save the machine alive and so on. After about 5-6 evening of playing with rendering settings (of course there is a LOT of Mantra render settings), one evening, by looking at my sleeping cat :), got the epiphany, that, maybe, Mantra doesn't like too much of triangles (generated by Houdini, btw) in rendertime subdivs. Quandragulated the thing in Softimage, and boom - everything became fine in H Mantra.
Of course, didn't get help on forums. Of course #2, Houdini does not have that plain SI (or even Blender) quadrangulate thing. Of course #3, with or without quads or triangles, same object renders fine subdivided in SI, both in Mental Ray and 3delight.

To stop long story here ( already have enough for small book of similar 'events') - it will take ages to get that lovely mix of Big Bang Theory and Ministry of Silly Walks, designed in Roswell 50s style :), to be a real competitor to modern race cars like SI or Maya.

Anyway hope dies last.

Hi there,
Can you share this ? you seem pretty attached to houdini so maybe it won't bother you if we start a thread or similar for this to share and maybe find answers.
Btw on which forum did you haven't found answers ?

Launch of H14 is scheduled to 01/15/2015, Toronto time if I'm not mistaken. Almost there. :)

I'm mostly around odForce. About sharing, there are already few hiplcs there, for what it worth. Generally, it's too early for sharing anything smart or planning any long relationship, there's enough people for that. After all, all what I remember from my first two years of XSI ( come aboard with Foundation 4), it was a constant 'switching' to XSI and back, including a few of 'explicit re considering of faith' :) on old XSI base. ICE didn't passed without negative comments, too.
As I said, I think I've solved the 'problem', credits are going to ears of my cat (triangles ws quads and so on) - so doesn't matter, anymore.
Let's see what future has to offer...
