Exactly. How does a company build competence if they let do all the development by others? It doesn't need much competence moving a thirdparty plugin into another folder and calling it a new feature. There are many examples. This is like a government underfunding the research sector. The result is always negative.Tekano wrote:also, to be fair, its pretty accurate to say (ok, guess or assume) that entire Industry benefiting new technology stuff like OpenSubdiv, is NOT being actively developed in or considered for Softimage. when, if it was truly competitive it should be and it certainly used to be.
so please, don't act all innocent or surprised when some of us get annoyed over issues like this, nor is it acceptable to imply that some of us are over-zealous etc, its insulting.

Re: Autodesk, Pixar and Open Subdivs
All our webinars are done this way, pre-record content which we broadcast with live introductions, interactions and Q&A. We've tried several times to demo stuff 'live' but it never really works due to bandwidth/latency issues. People can submit questions during the presentation and we catch up at the end.
Yesterday, there was a live Q&A with the Pixar guys after the main presentation. The webinars are normally recorded via the Adobe Connect software we use, but unfortunately I couldn't get it working due to internet probs.

One would think, there should be a viewport capable of displaying something like that in the first place....luceric wrote:Nice! not what I expected when I read webinar. How catmull-clark subdivision is different from opengl 4 tessellation in the case of preview only?

Questions arise from this youtube. First, with no dx11 support how does this even get done in SI? Second, specifically if the tessellation happens at render time don't MR / Arnold / Maxwell / vray etc have to implement this too, or is it only going to be useful if you have a renderman compliant renderer? Or is the AD plan for the DCC to pre-compute the tessellation first before sending it to the renderer?

their test application was OpenGL so that shouldn't be a problemLetterbox wrote:Questions arise from this youtube. First, with no dx11 support how does this even get done in SI?

Everything that is done in DX11 can be done with the last openGL

BETA 1 (4.5.2.40) highlights are:
1) Updated the embedded CMS client to Valentina 5; fixes several crashes, particularly on Mac.
2) Updated the 3Delight render engine to 10.0.125; see 3Delight Change Log for more details.
3) Added support for TriAx to TriAx Auto-Fit.
4) Added support for OpenSubdiv subdivision algorithms; Catmark, Bilinear, Loop; adds support for edge and/or vertex weights/creasing.
5) Added support for Ptex.
...
A company that gives away a dcc for free gets it implemented asap, whereas a company that makes billions, charges for it's software, and has multiple development teams can't. Someone explain the logic in that. Please.

AFAIK render engine needs to add support for OpenSubd also.Letterbox wrote:...and the rendering?luceric wrote:their test application was OpenGL so that shouldn't be a problemLetterbox wrote:Questions arise from this youtube. First, with no dx11 support how does this even get done in SI?

it is fully featured, production ready and bugfree implemented?Letterbox wrote:

a free tool can do what it want, a tool you pay for needs to think about a longer term what features gets in. so it might be possible ad has no resources actually to get coder free to implement it. and correct me if i am wrong, but deeply integrating such basic thing like opensubdiv in the complete toolset will not be that easy.

Provided, that the viewport itself isn't a problem. I don't see how the current HQV would cope with OpenSubdivs, when it can't handle what it is supposed to handle right now.luceric wrote:their test application was OpenGL so that shouldn't be a problemLetterbox wrote:Questions arise from this youtube. little bit more news there. In short, upcoming OpenSubdiv release is expect to be under Apache license, so Blender is about to jump in.

As the "Cult of Roosendaal" implements everything they can get their grubby hands on, I'm not all that surprised.
I wonder, however how long it will take them this time
and if this will be deemed important enough to actually change their roadmap drastically?
Disclaimer: Still not a big fan of Blender, in case you hadn't noticed...
