I'm still puzzled about whats gonna happen, if for example last update i got on subscription was Softimage 2013, and i didnt renew my sub, will i be able to use Soft2013 forever? Or the license will eventually expire some day?

Licenses don't just stop working, because you're not on Subs, nor will they stop after 30th April, 2016. By stopping Subs, you don't have previous version usage.Maximus wrote:I'm still puzzled about whats gonna happen, if for example last update i got on subscription was Softimage 2013, and i didnt renew my sub, will i be able to use Soft2013 forever? Perpetual licenses just keep running, until of course there's any problems with hardware. So, if you have standalone node locked license, then it's tied to the machine. As long as the machine is ok, then it will be fine. Same for network licenses as well, as long as the mac address doesn't change, the you'll be fine.
Though I can't confirm, but I would guess that as we approach the 2016, we'll hopefully remind people of this, so that if anyone did want to continue Soft but change some hardware, they could do it and we'd regenerate their license.
We did something similar a couple of years back with the old XSI 7.0x versions. These were essentially Avid versions and use a different licensing system. Autodesk offered to re-cut licenses before we stopped support for those versions.
There's nothing wrong with you running your version for as long as you want to, or need to. You don't have to take the migration either.
I know people who are still running old XSI's, back to 5.11

This seems to mean, that AD is pulling the plug on the license replacement system frightfully early. Seems like someone wants to really eradicate the once proud software that was Softimage... The Avid situation BTW is not a valid comparison , I'm afraid. This is Autodesk software, after all. Ah well...

Actually it is valid because if memory serves, XSI 7.01 and 7.02 were release after the acquisition.Hirazi Blue wrote:This seems to mean, that AD is pulling the plug on the license replacement system frightfully early. The standard Autodesk policy is to support the current version, plus 3 versions back. Autodesk honered that with those versions, until such time they were falling out of the policy limits.
There's still support (as long as your under Subs or a similar contract) until April 30th 2016, so it was me, I would do any necessary license house keeping before then. I know I will be.

If the hardware went down. You'd still be licensed to use the software.

Sure, though if you had a node locked license, you might have to get it transferred or reactivated. I'd have to check up on that though.

Just wondering the same thing. It's 2017, you have a node-locked license. The machine dies. There are no longer any working Softimage activation servers. What do you do besides risk running a cracked version?Bellsey wrote:Sure, though if you had a node locked license, you might have to get it transferred or reactivated. Yes, you can use your older permanent license of Softimage forever and Autodesk will help you move it if it's node-locked and your machine dies. The FAQ will be updated soon with info on this. stay tunedMaximus wrote:I'm still puzzled about whats gonna happen, if for example last update i got on subscription was Softimage 2013, and i didnt renew my sub, will i be able to use Soft2013 forever? There's no such thing as a "Softimage activation server". It's an Autodesk activation server. You just plug in your serial number.IslandDreamer wrote:Just wondering the same thing. I don't want to argue the general gist of your statement, because it has a lot to do with interpretation. I do however want to point out that there never was a XSI release 7.02. Interestingly enough luceric made the same mistake a while back on the CGTalk, so I am starting suspect it did exist, but was never released to the public...Bellsey wrote:Actually it is valid because if memory serves, XSI 7.01 and 7.02 were release after the acquisition.
(this is intended as a light-hearted post, BTW)

Re: Autodesk retires Softimage
Risky business idea, but like it's the end, may be help can comes from plug-in providers as SolidAngle, Exocortex, Mootzoid, Fabric, T-Gen, etc.... to sold for free (maybe time limited?) the Softimage version ? To boost last sales and show to AD that SI is a profitable product!
May be that's stupid, but lost for lost... why not?
