Re: What if Softimage died?
I agree with Bellsey, game area is definitely reserved for Maya, so I would not expect, not even in wild dreams, that to be XSI path.
I really thought that AD will promote XSI as competitor to Houdini, as it is more competitive on VfX area than Maya is. But now, they invested money into buying Naiad and building on that platform something that will compete with Houdini and will be part of Maya or standalone app. Is XSI so closed that this could not be done within XSI ?

Re: What if Softimage died?
You do realize that this leaves fewer areas for Softimage as now Maya is dominating the Games, Film and VFX markets.Bellsey wrote:Games? Really? Is that really a smart idea when Maya and Max are so widely used across the industry as whole. Dislodging those users from both packages would be very hard. And I think it's clear from the work we've already done around DX11 viewports, .NET SDKs for Maya and the launch of MayaLT, where our focus might lie.
I was thinking today of your question. I guess ICE should continuing developing ... but if I were to choose a area of expertise, I would choose Animation. Even though Maya is considerate the leader, I've read and saw lots of animators talking about how Softimage as an animation tool is vastly superior than Maya. So maybe you guys (AD) could focus on that and leave Maya to take on Houdini.
That could mean Softimage to be a big player on Pixar, Disney, Dreamworks, Blue Sky, etc. It would be very interesting to see.

Re: What if Softimage died?
It is what puts Softimage on table. You don't have anything else that warrants a change of software for a pipeline.I think focusing solely on ICE is a mistake for the future of Softimage.
Besides Softimage shouldn't focus in one technology but in an objective. I think that objective should be complex effects made easy for commercials and movies.
So ICE needs to be turned easier.

SI already focused on ICE and lost to Houdini. Now it's focusing on lowering costs for M&E. It has most seats only in industry of desperate users.

Re: What if Softimage died?
It is good that Softimage has procedural way of doing things with ICE, compared to Maya, for example. What is bad IMO is many users, have complained the past two upgrades were less then good, but the cost for Subscription remains the same.
If Maya had a procedural system at this point, Softimage fate would be sealed. The added plus is the FXTree, I think the FXTree could really shine at this point, considering the road Adobe took with CC.
Why doesn't someone from Autodesk give us some clues as to the direction of Softimage, it would be nice, lay out some ideas for the next release, encourage people, not, we are adding one or two things for Softimage, and fixing, maybe a few bugs, keep those subscriptions rolling.

Re: What if Softimage died?
I read and talked to some animators and they all seems to say the same thing. This procedural non-destructive approach is what differentiates Softimage from Maya.Falam wrote:It is good that Softimage has procedural way of doing things with ICE, compared to Maya, for example. So I guess if the 3rd party developers continue to support Softimage, it can stay alive. I mean, 3dsMax is cool only because of the plugins and scripts.

I suppose so. I'm going to do a little more in-depth, I'm considering a resuming a Softimage Subscription.

Yea it is clear for couple years now.. focus is on letting SI become obsolete and move everything to maya or mayaLT.And I think it's clear from the work we've already done around DX11 viewports, .NET SDKs for Maya and the launch of MayaLT, where our focus might lie.
as someone else noticed.. workflow is not everything and when in a year or so you don;t have a single plugin that connects SI to any of game engines and tech used.. well..
thank you AD... F U AD
his is vent directly to AD not anyone from AD on forum just that there is no misunderstanding. pure AD hate

Re: What if Softimage died?
First, nothing is lost.SI already focused on ICE and lost to Houdini.
And it isn't focuses in ICE. What focus on ICE - or anything else- in last two releases, 2013 and 2014?
These releases should have been a good step forward in fixing bottlenecks, make ICE easier to use and extend its power.

Re: What if Softimage died?
Hey...by the way..here are the new extensions for Maya, Max and Mud...
http://area.autodesk.com/industrynews/m ... _available
No Softimage, as we already knew, don´t we... ;)
A comment on that quoted from cgchannel:
So we didn´t got an extension release..for, ehm...two years?? 2012SAP was the last, right? Wow AD...you are doing a great job ;) And the really odd thing is, you don´t understand why people don´t love you?? Don´t be silly ;)
cheers,
oli

And if you’re wondering why we haven’t mentioned Extensions for Softimage or MotionBuilder so far: it’s because there aren’t any.
Autodesk has confirmed to us that it won’t be releasing an Extension for either package this time around: something that we suspect will be more of an issue for Softimage users than it is for MotionBuilder users

I don't think a big corporation worry so much if people don't love but however still buys its products.

Re: What if Softimage died?
See thats the only way you can really make your voice heard is to not resubscribe for softimage. If your on a bundle it kinda muddies the water a little bit.Nizar wrote:I don't think a big corporation worry so much if people don't love but however still buys its products.
Big corporations only responds when it impacts their bottom line or the PR is of such a nature that they have to. Ask yourself this. When the whole debacle around BiFrost came out. Why did AD$K only respond to the Max underground posts. We were just as uppity on the softimage forums.
Very simply there are orders of magnitude times as many 3dsMax seats out there then there are Softimage seats. We are seen as pretty insignificant, and therefore no real threat to the bottom line.

Also, you don't need some elaborate plugin to 'connect' 3D software to a game engine, a simple file format export is very often more than enough. And FBX actually does this job very well

Re: What if Softimage died?
Even smaller companies/corporations don't really care all that much IMHO, they're just better at pretending they do (as its part of the commercial "survival game").Nizar wrote:I don't think a big corporation worry so much if people don't love but however still buys its products.
