Them were the days. I got given my own commercial copy of XSI 7 for helping host one of the XSI events (as opposed the edu versions we normally use).

Still use it if I do a paid gig ;)

to be clear, this is a feature of mr 3.8!!!

your comment shows one more time that users should read release notes and fix lists of mr to know what mr is capable and what we dont get since years in si officially because there is no pressure from the userbase.

No kidding. I'm willing to bet none of that will be in SI. Probably still no Iray, still no IBL, still no progressive, still no MR optimization... The guys at Redshift have implemented more features this week alone than AD/MR have in the last 3 years!

AD must be losing subs because they called me at least 10 times, I finally had to block their number. I told them I'm not paying until I see something this time.

Getting rid of Stephen and the others was the last straw. Stephen still supports SI better than the official SI support, even though he's not even employed there anymore.

When Lightwave switched teams, it took years for the new team to get a handle on it. Same is likely to happen here.

They're milking the ones that have little choice for the moment (mainly studios) but to pay subs. This is of course a poor but otherwise desperate decision to earn as much as they can before falling way lower than they are, in terms of sales.
So basically what they're doing, is to jack up prices for the remaining customers to compensate for their smaller numbers, instead of offering better products for the money.
I'm not sure if I like what I'm thinking but someone else must be thinking it as well: someone at the Autodesk's helm is not very smart, unless the intent is to throw all to shit.
The society that separates its scholars from its warriors will have its thinking done by cowards and its fighting done by fools.

but what should they offer?
sure, there is a ton of things which is missing in si for example, but who should develop it now? 6 coding people are working on si, what should they develope that we all say, yes, this is great?
and more important, who should give them the input? i for myself have a long list of features i would like to see, pretty sure every user have it, but its not possible to create all that with only 6 people. and i am not talking about major features like new hair system which alone would surely take along time to develope for 2 or 3 people. not to mention all the bugs and small annoying things, a core rewrite which would be most important and also keep the software itself running. if you have only a small userbase, you cant do this, you can only keep the software alive. more is not impossible because the income is to low.

would be interesting how many users tryed to contribute to the development of si before they gone. i dont mean the beta program, more a general thing like writing mails to ad with feature ideas, things like this. but i think its not that much, users are good in to complain and left the building without to say what should be better.

The best strategy in my opinion would be to put a strong emphasis on developing the SDK/extensibility/data exchange, because this opens the doors 3rd party devs to add plugins, and for cross-application workflows, which help keeping or including Softimage in pipelines.
Take 3ds max... it survived until today because of the countless plugins and the 100 import/export formats.

It's unrealistic to demand 100 new features from the devs, given the circumstances, but there are many people out there willing to add functionality. ICE, in fact, is a kind of SDK, too. It was a brilliant move to push in that direction.

Any "monolithic" 3D application, no matter how powerful, can never cover all possible scenarios, and it puts pressure on the developers to follow up all the time instead of reducing their workload by accepting help from the "crowd".
The devs should concentrate on maintenance of the "core" parts / framework, and the more peripheral code like tools should possibly come from others. This should even be promoted intensively.

Not that this does not happen already, but it's still too difficult or "unclean" to write certain extensions, although much progress has been made (e.g. tools SDK).
Certain modeling related plugins that exist for Max and Maya would still not be possible.
The standard SDK still misses flexibility related to clusters, no new basic scene data types can be created, ICE still cannot do nurbs curves / surfaces.
Qt should be included ootb, also FBX and Alembic should be there, full featured and squeaky clean.

That is something even a smaller core team can accomplish.

Yes comparing what Motozoid and Fabric people can achieve and what a monster like Autodesk can't is a lesson in waste of resources
Maybe the bureaucrats: managers, middle managers, the middle manager of middle managers and power point types took over Autodesk...

This was posted in a Maya NYC forum
".... getting rumors in about Superfad closing its doors in NYC, LA, and Seattle. Hope they are all doing okay!"

If true this will be one less XSI house and one more nail in the coffin.

Can confirm from the Arnold mailing list that this is indeed the case. Hope all the folks there land on their feet.

I have the "S" camera Navigation shortcut in Maya 2010 (and other shortcuts) like I'm used to in Softimage, see the link:

http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.ph ... ostcount=5

It keeps the Alt as well, but the S behaves like the Alt.

"S" key in Maya is to make a Keyframe I remapped it to "K" just like in Soft as I did remap others keys to open the thing they call an Explorer (lol??) and also for the Graph Editor and "Render Tree"
Does not work in Maya 2012 - after searching google it seems they broke it in 2011...
