Its amazing how often you see Softimage|DS in making of videos ;) seems to still be used for a lot of pre viz stuff.

i am pretty sure that ilm sayed what they want for their future pipeline after si3d, what happen with these informations at si? why no one changed the direction? was sumatra to far ahead for minor changes? or was it a hard decision to say that si will not go the way ilm (ilm=big vfx studio industry) wants?
I'm not sure what they were thinking.. in 1997, when I arrived at "Microsoft Softimage", first to work on DS, people were just waiting for SGI to die and people to move onto Windows NT, so there was no question of doing anything other than the greatest Windows app there was, just with our custom look. And that would mean our SDK would have been Win32+COM+MFC.

I think the group of Softimage fans at places like ILM who talked to Softimage just loved Softimage for IKs, expressions, everything it does and the way it does it. But those animators.. they are not the people actually taking the pipeline decisions. I think those more technical people probably never asked Alias or Softimage to make a platform, they probably just though they would make their own proprietary platform, and use the apps only in some controlled way in the pipeline. However, Alias probably came in saying they were making a platform, plus were ready to do anything required to kill Softimage. If you just do that the clients ask, you're screwing yourself. You have to think greater and anticipate.

Studios don't want to lock themselves in someone's platform, but you just have to wait for the economy to go down and studio's R&D budget to shrink, and all the sudden people are much more receptive to using your platform rather than building their own.

You gonna tell us AD intentionally leaked this latest feature list to prepare online community in advance for whats coming so it doesnt erupt with negativity on the release day and spoil their party or something? Well I don't want to make you believe anything. You may believe in whatever you like. I am not a prophet nor trying to evangelize or something similar. Nor I am talking about conspiracy against Softimage.

AD was very agressive to flood studios with Maya and still it is.

I am also not blaming studios for using Maya. It is a proven tool and it works.

I am just sharing my side of the story and what happened. It is a shame that such a beautiful software like Softimage doesn't get the deserved attention from AD. And I am not saying something new. Go to AD website and tell me if you see Softimage in the first or in the second main pages. You'll see only Maya and 3ds MAX.

Your post has only one true and valid point.

I am a funny guy!

Cacoman, you're new on this forum and it shows: you don't know/recognize each users' style. :)

Surely this is a Mental Ray 3.11 improvement, so Softimage and Maya will be getting this as well!

suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure... if it only was exposed.

they seem to have exposed AO through GPU for XSI, though... and progressive on Mayas last SAP. So if you string all three together you get (almost) all MR features... Hooray!

That was the Autodesk intent with the Suite, give the user a complete functional Mental Ray experience scattered on 3 softwares.

/end joke

on another note, thanks god we have Redshift render now, testing it quite a lot and no turning back. Best thing i've seen in years.

Judging by the leaked feature list, maybe the one sneak peak we got was the only thing of substance they can show. I guess they could always make a sneak peak of the newly "Realigned Help Menu"...I can't believe that was actually listed as a bullet point...

(My frustration is not geared to the developers at all, just the way AD has been handeling Softimage)

Just to be fair... this last max preview is akeen tp SI treatment. This has been implemented BY NVIDIA for some years now. The only thing that AD had to do was to expose it through the intetface. Good job!
