Dropping SI from the 3 AD-subs you mention, however, might send the wrong signal.
Once Softimage sales figures and subscription numbers drop (drastically), chances are "good" Softimage itself will eventually get dropped also... (And this isn't defeatism, mere economics.)
Dropping Max & Maya (while keep the Softimage sub) would show Autodesk you are seriously investing in Softimage... =)) :D

My biggest concern is the Support/Client communication of Autodesk.
I am working for a studio which is just getting founded for various feature film projects.

So they contacted Autodesk and asked them what the roadmap or future of Softimage is going to be. No response (at least that was what I was told, don't nail me down on that because I am not involved in the purchase).
So they contacted SideFX and asked them what they think about building up a 100% Houdini Pipline in our studio. SideFX responded immediately offering free training for new Artists, offering free Licenses and more.

So tell me what would you do ? Starting your business spending x00.000 € on a software you don't know at all if it will exist anymore in 5 years or would you go with a Software like Houdini which is just outstanding in terms of support and were you also know it will be there and actively supported in 5 years.

Yeah, sure and a companion t-shirt "I'm with stupid" probably... :))
(sorry, I couldn't resist ;) )

ok, a few email responses, so I will try my best to offer some perspective and logic....

We still have to be tight lipped about future product and features, but like any company Autodesk will often announce news and some details about maybe partnership or arrangements its made with other companies, etc etc. But we still can't be specific about product and exact dates and times about when things may appear. This was the same when owned by Avid, and still the same under Autodesk, nothing has changed. I can't make any comments about any previous announcements about ICE or Moondust as it was codenamed, because that may have been before I joined Softimage.
Regarding Exocortex, I'm not really the best person to ask or comment, but there was a press release about the relationship between them and Softimage, but this was before the Autodesk aqquisition and a lot has happened since then. If you go to their website http://www.exocortex.com/simulation/slipstreamvx.aspx there is information about their technology and plugin, and Exocortex are still listed as part of the Autodesk Developer Network, as far as I know.

Heli: Regarding a products roadmap, this is information that falls into previous comments about the business rules which we must abide by. We do try and offer as much information as we can though, but still staying within the rules. I don't know who you contacted at Autodesk, be it direct or though a channel partner, but they probably would not of had this information to hand anyway. But if you wanted any information, then contact me privately and I might be able to help you and/or direct your enquiry.
You mentioned SideFX and how they responded and they may have even provided a roadmap, but their situation is different to Autodesks. SideFX is a private company, whereas Autodesk is a public company and so we have different business obligations in some areas.
(btw, I don't want to run down SideFX or Houdini. They are a good company and Houdini is a great package)

On the subject on features though, its hard to give any kind of definate answer, as to why things take longer than others, but I'm sure there's a very good reason why things do or don't happen. Features aren't just plucked out of thin air, they're often driven by customers' needs, large or small. I mentioned in a previous thread that Chinny had come to London to see customers and we saw many studios, of various sizes.

For things like marketing and websites, there's many things going on, and personally I wouldn't get side tracked by the fact that Softimage is not on the front of the Autodesk.com website. In the grand scheme of things, this is a small thing really and I mentioned many other products that also are not on the front page, so it's not as if Softimage is being singled out.
The AREA though, well that's different and many people have many opinions on it, and it has got better. I think its good that there's the survey now for people to respond to, as this shows that we are acknowledging the need for some change, and this is peoples chance to offer some input. Either way any idea or suggestion probably won't stand any chance unless people do the survey.

"Companion software/product", Well I mentioned about this in a previous post. Quite simple and logical really.
Though people mention about 'breathing life into Softimage' as if its a dead product, which personally I really don't understand. The landscape of 3D software is always changing, and I think satyajits post makes some good points relating to this.

Well, with all due respect, I wouldn't go with Houdini in this case, no in any way. A small company that compete against Autodesk, and Autodesk didn't bought any complete 3d app for a long two years... Maya was 2006, Softimage 2008... Who is the next? :) Of course no one knows what will happen for a five years...

Anyway, if your studio will go with Houdini, and Autodesk will buy SideFX, there is a chance that Helge will be Softimage developer again :) :) :)

Cheers

Helge went to into production for a studio in Spain. As far as I know he's still there.

to add another response for people, there's a thread post from Luc-Eric (Softimage Development Manager) on the Area, that might elaborate a little more on some things.....

Well it still sounds a little vague to me. I understand that Luc-Eric Rousseau cannot comment on the future as far as features are concerned, but some comments about the future positioning of the product as a whole and the plans how Softimage plans to broaden it's user base might have been welcome additions...

I mean, Softimage does want to still expand, not just
luceric wrote:to continue to develop the product for the existing clients
This is quite understandable feature-wise,
but marketing-wise growth seems a necessity to be able to survive in the long run...

well the fact of the matter is that the precise information and details people want, is the stuff that we can't readily discuss publicly, which I know is frustrating. Though I think Luc-Eric comments are fair considering the rules we have to operate under.

We're always keen for new users of any of our software, including Softimage, but you also have to consider the current climate. Economically its still tough out there for people, and that is a big factor for people. No one will be keen to rip up their Max/Maya pipeline and suddenly move to Softimage, not when money is tight. The same goes for Soft studios, they won't want to dump it and suddenly switch to something else. However in both cases, studios will want to expand pipelines and add different tools and technology, and pipelines have already been multi-platform and software for a while anyway.

First of all, please don't get me wrong,
I understand the matter at hand is very complex...
And I am just an annoying user, not an Autodesk employee :ymhug:
In light of the often quoted (and explained) "companion to..." statement, it seems only fair to ask,
how Softimage will position itself in the coming years. At the moment "companion to..." is probably a good strategy,
but some day Softimage will want to broaden its horizons again,
because the "companion to..." strategy seems to be a short-time (albeit probably effective)
way to deal with the market, not a long-time one...
I could be mistaken, however... ;)
