Re: IRay Progressive Rendering Tests
Magog: Not sure. I would think the cuda controller takes care of it, and present the 3 cards as 1 device to iRay
Mr Core: Thanks for contributing! Lighting and mats looks good but I gotta say I'm not really convinced by how iRay does dof. It just looks washed out, mental ray's normal dof looks better (2nd picture i posted looks like the paper got wet)
ActionArt: to what did you set it? I'll edit the 1st post then, I just used some made up numbers there.

Re: IRay Progressive Rendering Tests
I only had a few minutes to play but ended up with min rays at 2,000 and max at 20,000 which gave a smooth result. That's VERY quick and dirty testing though almost certainly can be improved upon.
So far it seems Iray spends a lot of time on bright areas that are already OK and takes a long time to remove grain in shadow areas. Maybe the right combination of settings would help this.
I do like it for the render region tool! Very cool.

Re: IRay Progressive Rendering Tests
what annoy me the most is the fact that due to no integration you cant save out renders in the normal way, you have to use the preview window...
This also happens with every other hidden stuff like IP, IBL etc..and so with iray its so frustrating..

Re: IRay Progressive Rendering Tests
I just checked iRay on my Softimage, but I get a constant out of memory error for my GPU (Nvidia Quadro 3700). Checking the Nvidia control panel tells me I have a lot of memory on my card, but only a tiny fraction is actually free. Does anyone of you perhaps know, how to find out what's hogging my GPU RAM and how to free it?
Otherwise this iRay stuff will pass me by completely (for now).
No big deal, but if anyone knows of a solution I still would like to hear it...
;)
PS I tried setting PhysX to CPU as I read somewhere that should/could help, but alas this didn't work either...

Re: IRay Progressive Rendering Tests
The only thing that comes to mind is disabling Aero which you've probably done already

Re: IRay Progressive Rendering Tests
Hmm, I actually will have to check if I turned Aero on or off later today.
Chances are it's on. Thanks for the suggestion...
;)
edit: after turning off a lot of "window dressing" and a restart, I managed to get about 400MB free GPU memory.
But it still doesn't work, crashes my SI horribly and makes me want to shy away
from this as of yet still unsupported feature...

Hrngh.. I think I'll wait for official support/next version too.. lack of nice looking DOF and instancing shook me off a bit from it.

Well, my own little mystery is solved:
puny graphic cards (with less than 1GB onboard RAM) needn't apply...

Re: IRay Progressive Rendering Tests
tryin iray again for fun after a while, it appears to be using only my GPU, is there a way to force it to use both gpu and cpu? cause i have 12 cores unused!

See the bright side of it ! you could watch a movie while rendering in IrayMaximus wrote:tryin iray again for fun after a while, it appears to be using only my GPU, is there a way to force it to use both gpu and cpu? cause i have 12 cores unused!
I think ( it s shot in the dark ) it is may be due to how the string options are passed from the Geoshader to iray.
Is there any source code for this geoshader to check how the variable are passed ?

Re: IRay Progressive Rendering Tests
Yeah, I saw a couple threads around talking about the new MR 3.10 features.
iray2.0 with GPU [CUDA] support, BSP2 acceleration, and Alembic support.

Re: IRay Progressive Rendering Tests
This is a little test i did with iRay

some info:
gfx card: # INFO : IRAY 0.16 361 MB info : CUDA device 0: "GeForce GTX 570" (compute capability 2.0, 1280MB total, 573MB available)
samples: # INFO : RC 0.4 392 MB progr: progressive: finished (sub)frame 4000 in 1.34313 seconds
rendertime: # INFO : RC 0.4 304 MB info : wallclock 1:32:30.64 for rendering
I've set the sampling level to 4k, at 2.5/3k was already pretty decent, the only grain that still remain was on the red parts of the chair, could have removed it with a denoiser tho.
Also for who is interested i've let the diagnostic run while rendering to check the sampling level it reached, for iRay the sampling level is called "(sub)frame" here you can see which sampling he reached in real time, so that is handy.
Another use of this is set sampling, drag a little render region and crank it up untill you dont see anymore noise, then you can slightly figure out the render time.
sun + sky, 1 portal on the window, thats it. 3d Dof, some grading in post
Just for people that might ask here its the raw render straight out of xsi:

cheers, Max
p.s. the lighting/shading setup took less than 2 minutes, i wish this engine would be decently implemented, it would be an amazing tool to use. Havin render region with iRay is just amazing.

Is that 1min 32 sec or 1hour and 32min?
