Have a look at Krita, it looks sexy, works on Windows and Linux and absolutely free for commercial use. It's multithreaded and actively uses OpenGL, 16/32 bits per channel are supported

Well it just lags a lot when painting even on my fairly powerfull pc, here's a qoute from the dev Boudewijn Rempt from this thread:
But Krita on Windows is still, and will be for some time, experimental. We're working on a sketch version of Krita on Windows, but so far few improvements have trickled back to the desktop version of Krita. I do think that that the 2.5.2 version is better than 2.4, though 2.5.0 and 2.5.1 had some problems.

I really wish someone who really knows about Windows would join the team -- we're suffering from a big lack of expertise here.
Perhaps you should go help them out Constantine? :P

I was asking because it works great so far on my Ubuntu, lol. By the way, 2.5.2 (up to 2.5.9) is already available for Windows, did you test it?

Makes sense ;)

Yup i tried version 2.52, i liked the look and controls of the brushes so much that i considered installing ubuntu just for Krita...

But instead i'm building a custom panel for PS that collects a bunch of plug ins and custom tool presets, not sure it'll do - i'm still bouncing over to Painter atm... The "one program does it all" is still a mirage i keep chasing...

Super quick review: it sucks for any serious painting but it has some interesting particle brushes that might be usefull for making textures.
I'm too lazy to try out comping with it ;)
