It's because Softimage don't need an extension. ;)

yeah because max doesn't have particles, right? "point cloud" is the
non-mesh data that comes, for example, from 3d scanners.

Don't see a lot in those extensions, many of which we already have in one form or another, that are earth shattering that we need absolutely in Soft.

Better boolean tools, yes.
Retopology tools, yes.

How about better curve/nurbs tools and/or basic brush based interactive sculpting tools complete with ICE nodes equivalents and SDK?

My 2 cents.

thank you for clarifying this, i know nothing about 3d scanners, all done by hand here.
I was being a bit sarcastic as the article http://area.autodesk.com/industrynews/upcoming_maya_3ds_max_and_mudbox_2014_extensions does not mention anything about softimage.
For those who love xsi "point cloud" brings to mind only one thing.........................................................xsi :ymparty:
does max do particles or not?

Too add, the point cloud support is for the .rcp and .rcs file formats which we generate with our ReCap service and ReCap pro software.

Wow, that's so funny it truly must hurt... :))

@all - It has been obvious for quite some time our "resident" Autodesk employees for the most part
do not care about Softimage at all. So be it, but please don't rub it in!
:ymhug:

@grreez - You really shouldn't have to explain sarcasm to luceric... ;)

edit: added an extra super-duper friendly smiley...

People say modo has great topology tools.... (i did have a go once)
softimage has all the tools to do these sort of things plus
far more better snapping tools
and of course
one can assemble a compound in ice to make topology tasks run faster.
Nurbs and booleans, i use rhino and doubt those in xsi ever going to change.

looks like he might not know what retopology tools are. Actually, given all the games modeling being done in XSI, retopo tools would be more obviously needed than nurbs tools.

Then we need at least the pre-requisites to do Nurbs and all kinds of other stuff ourselves: a completed operator SDK.

With this set up properly, people could add on anything. Only pros, no cons. Eluding this makes no sense whatsoever anymore.
The only strategy that really makes sense now is opening up for customizability as far as possible, because no points to be won anymore with a few feeble features here and there.
Softimage is going to be continued for now, but what's the point in putting all the workload on the developers, which are sooo few, as the lament goes.

I don't get it when people complain about 3ds Max being "nothing more" than a plugin-framework. That was a brilliant strategy, and the reason for it's success.
Same with Maya, which can be pimped beyond recognition.
