Really interesting move indeed, hope they have a plan to add a GPU computation but either way it is always nice to have another hair solution in Maya

I wonder what happens to Joe Alter's patent...
It doesn't expire until June of 2021 (link)
Will he continue to enforce it or will he finally retire?

If I were Joe, I'd try to set a patent at some strategic point in GPU world, so no one would be able to avoid the thing. That should work for next twenty years :). According to link from first post, he already previewed full GPU version 2016, but never released that one, so, could be something like my speculation.
In any case, I don't believe that Epic is interested in keeping the 350$ plugin for Maya or else.

Curious, I have not moved over to Maya yet, what do people use for a hair solution.

As far as I know (feel a bit confident with rigging-animation in Maya, but never used any Maya hair), Yeti is still popular for fur (while Yeti is also affected by some Shave's patents). Long hair, especially show-reels on Artstation , that's mainly built-in xGen, some Ornatrix here and there. xGen alone, imho is typical Maynish mix of strong and fast engines, against stone-age controls and irreversible setups - I think it still can't update topology changes on emitter and such, but, well, Mayans already are not able to understand the non-destructive workflow so it's fine for them. Perhaps every second setup in Maya is irreversible in some way. Ornatrix shoud be much more controllable, as it is coming from 3ds Max environment (generally, Max plugins are created to survive without team of TDs).

It would seem Joe Alter won't be enforcing his patent anymore:
Yeti fur plugin goes back on sale in the United States
