Jeff Lowe to bring us this light hearted, tongue in check spot which features hundreds of CG cats. The cats run with our hero through the streets of Croydon after he discovers he has saved money on his car insurance.

Only a handful of cats could be captured on the shoot meaning hundreds of CG ones were expertly designed by Sam Driscoll and his team of CG animators. Sam comments 'We asked everyone in the studio to go home and take pictures of their own cats, which we then incorporated into the spot as "extras". We had a lot of fun studying cat behaviour and made a library of their different 'run-cycles', which allowed us to pick and choose appropriate animation for each shot.

One of the big challenges was the final shot which called for 100s of cats to run though long grass, we achieved this using a custom setup with ICE in Softimage. The crowd system was built in house and was based on CrowdFX also in Softimage. We had to make sure the cats were able to 'see' each other and were able to foresee and avoid collisions."

"we could scrub forwards and backwards inside of Softimage and we simply couldn’t do that in Max. But Soft and V-Ray with this amount of geometry was amazing."

What a complex shot.

Notice how the Fxguide webpages never puts a link to Softimage at side bar. It is only Maya.
Maybe if someone is a member can make a comment there.

Mighty No. 9

Just a quick shot of softimage about 4 minutes and 8 seconds mark.

@acidkittens - Our Youtube tags DO NOT take the URL, just the ID of the video.
The YouTube "Start at" feature doesn't seem to work here, you'll have to scrub through it manually, I am afraid. - HB

Just read this interview and saw the short. Amazing work.

It's nice to see people using 3D to tell stories.
