Displacement Map To Create Sub-Polygons ?

Hi,
is it possible to refine the actual polygon object with sub-polygons by applying a displacement map ?
I found Model/Modify/Deform/Push, but didn't see how to apply the image to it ... probably it needs to be a weightmap or fiddled in the material editor.
