SI crash while using the proportional modeling tool

Post by anyheart » 07 Mar 2019, 10:00

SI 2015 R2-SP2(X64)

SubD modeling, when the camera is close to the mesh, and then ues the proportional modeling tool to tweak components, after tweaked, obrit the camera(still in propertional modeling tool mode),sometimes it will crash ,suddenly, no recovery.

Does anyone have the same problem?

it had been crashed many times before, but not every time :-\

It sounds a little familiar.. does the mouse pointer happen to move by itself into a corner of the screen before it crashes?

Thats odd, I never had that before,
what do you mean by 'sometimes'?

Is it most of the time?

You can also find something called 'Process Monitor', and check what was the last thing XSI.exe accessed before crashing (can point to what's made it crash)
and you can also set the log to an external file to see if there wasn't some error logged just before crashing.

Am I use the process monitor in a right way?

i don't know how to read this and check it out,is it the problem upon the "Thread Exit" line in the picture?

Ah yes... I have had this bug. But I forgot how to fix it. I think there is a startup setting you gotta put into the startup configuration file. Wish I was more helpful. Let me check my archives....

Aha, maybe it's this one.

Go to the file here:
C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Softimage 2015\Application\bin\setenv.bat

:Fix selection block
set XSI_DISABLE_NEW_PICK=1

:Set tablet support
SET XSI_ENABLE_WINTAB_SUPPORT=1

Both are settings I found that fixed a number of issues with stuff in Softimage.

it seems it is more stable than before, but not sure, still crash once like before,so when you add this two Environment Variables to setenv.bat, no more crash like before? or others Environment Variables need to be added ?

looks like a graphics card driver crash. but you didn't specify which graphic card you have

Ya, sometimes it points to a dll or something that makes it crash.. *sometimes..

Shouldn't tablet support be turned OFF (=0) ? And isnt =1 equals ON?

Also do you use a wacom by the way?

Yes,i use the wacom tablet.
It won't crash immediately ,just after many adjustment(when the camera close to the mesh, tweak components, orbit camera, tweak components······orbit camera, crush suddenly),whether freeze the modeling history or not,

Code: Select all

set XSI_ENABLE_WINTAB_SUPPORT=1
indeed ENABLES tablet pressure support, which Softimage disables by default (look here)

I found an ancient solution to disable Wacom usage in Softimage via the Wayback Machine,
but I don't know if it still applies (USE AT OWN RISK!): you can read it here.
(The author is former Softimage developer Luc-Eric Rousseau...)

Code: Select all

set XSI_DISABLE_NEW_PICK=1
is a workaround for certain problems with selection (still not mentioned here!!!).
It can, however, be found in the "Softimage 2015 Readme" under "Known Issue" "SOFT-9444" here.
Look at this thread. The corresponding Mailing List thread starts with this post.
Stay safe, sane & healthy!

Ya wacom issues (if related) date back a while.

I too use a Wacom (in mouse mode) and switch to my regular mouse whenever simulating anything, for the stop button to work at all.

(which I don't find to be a big deal since I frequently switch between both, just to switch what muscles/nerves I use to move my cursor :) )

Oh now I remember how I fixed it. In the proportional settings there is one that bugs out. Switch the settings up a bit and it should be more stable.
