Hi everyone!

I’d like to show you a few pictures and the trailer for a short film we just finished here in Windmill Lane Pictures in Dublin. I wrote and directed it, and I was the lead 3D artist as well. Katie McGrath (Merlin) did the voices.

The pitch : A young woman forces a Banshee to bring her to the Otherworld to try to save her husband who died at sea.

All the 3D was done in Softimage, with custom shaders (Shader Compounds actually), a ton of ICE stuff, and a few pipeline tools to help us through the project. Many passes rendered out of Mental Ray, and the comping was done in Nuke.

The premiere was at the Galway Fleadh the 14th of July. Now, well, we’ll try to show it all around the world if we can! Feel free to check the website (http://www.tridanstoirm.com) or the facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/tridanstoirm)

Enjoy the pictures!

That looks very nice. Is it viewable online? The trailer is too short!

Thanks a lot for your comments! We're gonna show the short on festivals for at least a year, so the full version will end up on the web in a few months... Patience!

Great work - nice grade, and artistic approach to lighting and texturing. Well done . . . I'm sure it will do extremely well. Congrats

Very nice result.
The sea was done in ICE too?
Will it be broadcast on the web?
Cheers
David

Thanks again!

The sea was indeed done in ICE. I didn't use aa_Ocean because I wanted a more customized sea. I used a grid deformed by ICE nodes for the main shape, and the particles were generated by the crests of the waves (where the polygons were denser) - and by the collisions as well. I had tried to add a ripple effect to it but it was more disturbing than anything so I removed it.

I used a customized shader pipeline for the whole project (including mainly a multipass architectural and SSS_Skin shaders) and for the sea I actually used a bit of the Ocean shader for the bump (quite old school!). I wasn't looking for a realistic result but rather a graphic one, so it worked really nicely in my opinion.
