sign of the times? - blender siggraph 2011 real

Post by Rork » 29 Aug 2011, 09:13

Some pretty nice stuff in there, and I can't recall ever having seen one before at Siggraph:

I only wish they would have a more standard interface, even the latest incarnation of Blender isn't doing it for me.

enjoy the movie!

A nice reel, indeed...

The only problem I have with it is the following: if it attempts to highlight recent activities on the Blender front, "Big Buck Bunny" and "Elephant's Dream" shouldn't have been included. If it, however, attempts to highlight every good thing ever made with Blender, "Sintel" shouldn't have been included...

Everybody's a critic ;-)

Just look at the fact it's FREE, the stuff being created with it is looking good.
You can create mediocre stuff with SI, Maya, Max, LW etc . as well.

The thing is that Blender is making it's way onto the SIGGRAPH stage, which was dominated by the 'big players' for years.
And looking at the developments within the Blender community, it starts to look as a very usable -and again FREE- alternative for some people.
There are already studios out there using Blender in production full-time.

You're absolutely right: it's good to see Blender thrive (and thrive it does!) ;)

In my experience, blender has always been at siggraph, I think I got blender demo CD back in 1999 from their booth. I cannot recall seeing a blender booth this year (but I also missed other booth that I know were there), but they had a user group meeting and participated in a few other ones. Siggraph always has a place for non-profit. just to clarifty, "siggraph reel" doesn't mean it's presented on some sort of global Siggraph theater, it just means you did it to coincide with siggraph.

Hi Luc-Eric,

Thanks for clearing that up.

I've been to SIGGRAPH a bunch of times, but apparently Blender wasn't on my radar, or found the booth/demoCD's at the convention.
Also yes, I never saw anything in the electronic theater. Or I forgot. It's probably the age.... :D

Maybe I saw more than there is to see. So..... move along, nothing to see here ;)

The Blender people apparently were quite active at Siggraph 2011,
but judging from the pictures their booth truly was relatively easy to miss...
