Looking for feedback on animation

Post by JimH » 14 Jun 2016, 15:43

Hi,
I'm teaching myself the basics of animation using the gear rigs (love them).
I'm working through the animators survival kit book and using various Muybridge photo references for walk cycles etc. I was hoping to get some feedback on my learning. I have posted two cycles on another website with several views but no feedback.

I'd be very grateful for a trained eye to assist my learning
Thanks in advance
Cheers
Jim

It works better from the side than from the front. It might be easier to crit if you could capture it with a side and front view, rather than the rotation?

Feels like there isn't enough lateral movement in the hips, and the trunk feels too stiff, but the head is moving too much - when you run the spine and neck try to compensate to keep the head as still as possible. I feel like the full leg extension should be the last frame that it is in contact with the floor, then be careful to watch the arc as the foot comes off.

Side note - I just discovered you can frame by frame in vimeo using shift + left/right arrow - handy!

Overall it's a pretty good run cycle!

& to be critical apart what Matmos said, (also using his vimeo tip which I too didnt know :) )

The feet kink up quite a bit or maybe to fast before hitting the ground.

And just as the feet move off the ground, while we couldn't exactly say that the legs snap, but could be made more fluid.

And lastly, it's a bit as if he was stomping something when the feet land, which happens perhaps too suddenly, also with a forward motion first and then down which could be more simultaneous or in one move.

Otherwise the timing seems good,
so kudos and feel free to show us subsequent wips!

Hi
Sorry for the late response, have been more busy than usual.
Again thank you for your feedback mattmos and FxDude.
I have made some changes (less stomping in feed, more lateral movement in the hips and stabilising the head)
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Jim

Great fan of Muybridge too (although I don't know much about character animation).

Last one looks good, but maybe he is stamping a little to much? If you look at some of the Muybridge sequences,
the front leg is more straight.

(another fave is Marey, where the movements are a bit more detailed)

Thanks tarkovsky,
I have straightened the front legs just prior to contact. Yes, this seems to look much better.
