Make Model from Photo / Tracing

Post by Frank1000 » 08 Jun 2014, 17:03

Hi,
what would be a good way to convert the railing in this photo in a 3D object ?
Wasn't there once an image trace function in SI respectively in ICE ? So to create a curve and extrude it ?
Or is there even better ways to handle such a case ?

Frank

hmp unfortunately on more complex shapes illustrator delivers many part curves but not a whole cureve to extrude ... who has an idea how finally get the image traced and used as a curve for extrusion by SI ?

Honestly I don't know how you got just this from Illustrator. Anyway, I'd go with Photoshop for such thing. First, create selection in Photoshop, convert selection to path ('make path from selection' in PS), finally, 'export path to Illustrator'. There's reason to go with PS selection first - selection, by it's nature, has a form of closed curve, suitable for nice, 'closed' extrusion in SI.
In case of any conversion to Ai/eps, readable in SI, it won't hurt to go with oldest possible Ai/eps, that is version 3, without any addition like tiff preview or like.
If you want to get a very accurate, smooth shape, perhaps is good idea to just draw the curve, over this picture. For something like this pic, plain drawing could be a faster method, instead of endless adjusting of curve tracer.

If you have Access to Zbrush, you can try this tutorial I just made for you.

Hi Mathaeus and Pooby,
thx for the solutions. The ICE / Z-Brush example is very nice indeed, love the re-meshing for the clean and efficient polymesh, thank you for the movie :-))

thx. My laptop does the poly delete, but then unfortunately, with no mercy, crashes SI on me each time. Have decreased the poly count of the grid, but still.

My laptop's HD is close to the end of its life and to be exchanged, that probably also causes the SI crash on the ICE Image Tracing.

Hi Paul, i've not used zbrush before. right now when i goZ my SI object over, i don't receive it in ZBrush immediately like in your video, but need to make a stroke ... is that a viable way ? Because remeshing didn't show a result with my try to follow your session session ?
How am i handling this correct ?

Frank

Hi Frank,

I am sorry but I dont know why Zbrush might not be doing what you want. Maybe GOZ isnt properly installed?

you're using Zremesher? It should be the same. if not I have no idea why, sorry

good luck with it.

(to be honest, you can probably do all of this in Zbrush, and skip the XSI part. I just dont have the knowledge)

If zbrush step is required, maybe it is more proper to do it all in Zbrush. Just assign an alpha to your mesh, create mask by alpha and extract the mesh by that mask. Also there is a thickness attribute next to the extract button in the subtool menu.
