Redshift is a bit further on than the alpha tag might suggest - it has already been used in production:

Redshift is spectacular and if you want to do some Arch Vis in SI I would really try to get on the test team. You'll be blown away. It's very stable and I think very ready for Arch Vis.

As for modeling with curves, I know it's a bit of a change in workflow but a lot of what you're used to doing with curves can be done (probably faster) in SubD's once you get used to it. There are some very nice tools on the rray site that can help with almost anything.
