My adventure

Post by Werner » 18 Feb 2015, 09:55

Great to see more Soft people jumping on to Houdini.

Like I said in a previous post..I tried Maya for over two months after news of the EOL, and decided that I would
leave the 3d industry before putting myself through that...until I installed Houdini.

Houdini is different, and my approach while learning will be more geared towards everyday work, rather than fx stuff. Communication with Sidefx has been great and some of my requests have made it to H14 already. I realised that I'm not dealing with Autodesk anymore, and things are moving fast.

This is my first contribution to example scenes that I will post. I tried to recreate a tension map (built one in ICE long time ago and use it allot) that can drive any deformation on rigged geometry.

Let me know if this was useful.

Fuck yeah!

As a non rigger I tell you it will be useful! (I didn't checked the file yet ;)) )

PS. Werner, how good you are with rigging? I rigged couple technical things in Houdini couple years ago, but there are many techniques that I'm not aware of. Is there a chance that if I ask you may have some cool answers for me? :)

I've had my fair share of character rigging over the last 8 years.
You have my email address. Ask away and hopefully I will be able to help.

My first Houdini rig is in the works. It's a basic humanoid rig to see how much different it
is between Soft and Houdini, but so far it seems to be very powerful.

Cool!

PS.
My version of your file. Updated to more current standards by adding attributeVOP vs standard VOP and visualizers instead of setting Cd + I removed couple things to simplify everything. And made simple IK rig with custom gizmoz.

Here is something I was playing with.

Arc Interpolated shapes...like we had in ICE from people like Ahmidou Lyazidi and Pierre Rousseau.

Let me know what you think. The curves are just for display purposes.

Little update...Now the height of the vector is driven by the distance the points travel. Much better.

Interesting to see how widely Houdini will be taken up in South Africa. I am looking into using it for my MA which will deal with massive point clouds ;)
