Rumors about 3ds Max 2016

Post by MauricioPC » 27 Mar 2015, 02:31

From what I read on some facebook groups, some guy said that 3ds Max has the Ephere Lab integrated into it.

Looks like a simplified ICE, but maybe it can be developed to be something more.

Feels more like a Fabric thing to me. At least they had a good look at both ;-)

Yeah, this looks like the major feature. The most important diference I feel is that Softimage was really streamlined for this type of work while Max is heavy, slow, etc.

But from what I read of Maya, I'm not that excited also. I would still choose Softimage above both. Damn, since it's a rent next year, I would rent Softimage easily. Help us Autodesk, damn you.

Well, even if something like this will be integrated by default, max still is so much old school. I still wonder how some people can do some really cool stuff with it. But maybe AD is coming up with some more "exciting" news...I doubt though after the last year´s experiences ;)

I'll say that Max is still the best modeler out there (now that SI is gone). But maybe it's because I've learned my modeling knowledge from Grant Warwick, Gavriil Klimov, etc. This guys are beast modelers and when you see them working, it's hard to understand why would you model in Maya. Their workflow is good and solid.

And in FX you also have some beast guys like Allan McKay, Anselm, Hristo. I also find that the Max guys are generally very helpful and sharing stuff. But if this is the only feature for 2016, the last version before the rental thing, I think it should have more.

One side note ... while I find 3ds Max to be a heavy application, with some lags to open some menus, it does crash less on my poor computer than Maya and the viewport performs better with my old 550ti in SLI. Heck, I can import some really heavy scenes in Max that if I do in Maya, the legacy viewport gets less than 1fps and the VP2 can't load everything into my GPU. So Max is better suited for the third world country hobbyist! :D

it's not ephere/cortex, or fabric or any third-party plugin.
it's something that when I saw it, I said "OMG, the Softimage users will be talking".

Have you 'played' with it Luceric or just watched a presentation about it? Just curious if after the launch if you can share your opinion on it. :)

no I didn't try that stuff myself, and I wouldn't be the right person to evaluate it. But the principles of it will make you go "mmmm".

Maybe its a continuation of the XBR (Excalibur) project efforts started way back in 2008/2009.

One thing we know for sure: AD "will not build ICE again within those products"... ;)
Asked whether Softimage’s ICE visual programming system – often regarded as one of the key strengths of the software – would be integrated into 3ds Max or Maya, Patel commented that “the [design] concepts behind ICE will continue to live on, but we will not build ICE again within those products”.

This is how it looks:

Well, this may be a game changer for 3ds Max. Hope they continue working on it and on performance improvement (something Max needs a LOT).
