Cant find missing maya features

Ok Ive jumped back to maya since version 7 and I cant find 2 cool things that I used to like about maya.
The camera view focus used to smoothly move but now the view focus is the same as any other 3d package (immediate)
When there are a lot of objects on screen occluding each other and you clicked on that area a nice little flyout selection box used to appear so you could choose which object to select.
Can anyone tell me how to activate these things please?
