I think it's because people learned 18 months ago that it wasn't going to be included in Maya/Max 2017 and that Autodesk was pushing them towards Arnold. They've had plenty of time to process their feelings. They have time to transition, and now that you have to pay for a plugin, mental ray has become just one of many options.

At this point, a studio that is comfortable with Maya and Mental probably also has a permanent license of Maya 2016 and render nodes of mental ray that they can use for years, while they figure out where to go next. There are also could render services out there they can get additional render nodes. They're good for 3 or 4 years if they want to procrastinate.
They've already processed their feelings when MR wasn't moving at-all across years.

That while there were other usable alternatives,
(Can't say as much for everything your employer has (blindly) pushed towards.)

And rendering in one thing or another isn't that much of an incredibly huge deal.

Despite any MR advantage, GI was was a pretty important thing to be left lingering,
and I think any "Good riddance" mostly has to do with that.

But while there are many renderers, production ready/proven ones are rare,
and will reiiterate that the bigger shame is it having gone to that point over time, rather than it finally getting EOLed.

Like (yet again) one less (of few) world class participants with it's own uniqueness and sets of advantages.

(for what reason?)
