there is an unreal rumor because Marc Petit is both chairman of the board of Fabric, and general manager of the Unreal Engine unit in Montreal.
And while at Autodesk, he did the same thing and acquired Softimage to staff his game middleware team.

The AR creation tool is said to be based on technology from Fabric Software, a Canadian company Apple quietly bought in 2017. The acquired startup's Fabric Engine let developers automatically create environments and objects using procedural generation, a technique used in games like No Man's Sky. A Fabric co-founder, Peter Zion, is believed to be running the development tool project.

Thank you for the info. Not sure Fabric will ever be a 3d program again, not sure Apple will be successful with it but at least I'm glad they didn't get threatened of a lawsuit by Autodesk.
